In this paper, an attempt has been made to present the subject and state of the three main functions of each maritime country; these are: the maritime safety, maritime security and maritime defense functions. There have been also discussed the subjects of these functions as well as the reasons and process of the closest and closest cooperation between these functions, and even the merger of these functions in one maritime function, i.e. in the maritime safety, security and defense functions Especially quickly proceeds the merger of the maritime security and maritime defense functions in one maritime function, i.e. in maritime security and defense function.

In this paper, there are presented the main reasons and results of changes in maritime navigation. The following issues are discussed: substance of maritime navigation; the main reasons of changes in maritime navigation; integration of the ship’s navigation process and its results; the growing necessity of supervising all the human activities performed at sea; steady increase of the amount and differentiation of the human activities at sea and; the main results from the changes in maritime navigation. This paper should be considered as further précising and developing the authors’ considerations and conclusions presented in the earlier papers.

Pilot investigations were carried out with the objective of testing the usefulness of measuring the density of the mud/water medium to determine nautical depths in the Port of Gdansk. Results show significallt differences between the nautical depth and the depth detennined by acoustic methods at loose bulk cargo terminals. It was also found that too large depth values were obtained when 33 kHz transducers were used. Applicability of acoustic profiling for distinguishing structure of deposits which must be dredged was tested.
