Quantized conductance of gold nanowires was demonstrated in our experiment. Gold nanowires a few atomic diameters wide were created by hitting a gold wire against a flat surface of a gold sample placed on a piezostack. The conductance of the nanowires was measured with an oscilloscope. A nanowire suspended between the sample and the gold wire was directly observed to have a quantized conductance. Results were statistically analyzed by plotting histograms for several measured conductance values. Observed quantum units of conductance differed by about 10% from theoretical predictions. This discrepancy is due to practical limitations of the apparatus, which are further discussed.
