For many years, driving under the influence of psychoactive substances other than alcohol, i.e. substances with a similar effect, usually marijuana derivatives, has been an issue in Poland. Driving under the influence of a psychoactive substance is forbidden and results for example in a mandatory psychological examination aiming to determine the absence or existence of psychological contraindications to driving a vehicle (Article 82, paragraph 1, item 4a of the Act on Vehicle Drivers). However, defining contraindications remains a significant challenge. These should encompass not only factors related to the motivation for driving under the influence of substances, but also elements involved in diagnosing potential addiction, as well as psychological aspects that may form the basis for preventing similar behaviour in the future. Meanwhile, there are no guidelines for psychological examination of this group of people, or clear indications of the impact of substance use on mental processes required for driving a vehicle. Individuals using so-called medical marijuana – prescribed, for instance, for analgesic purposes – are subject to the same treatment as those who consume marijuana derivatives recreationally. That contributes to a social problem with a real impact on the road safety aspects. The article discusses the impact of marijuana derivatives on drivers and summarizes standards (recommendations) for psychologists dealing with diagnosis and judgments in the field of transport psychology. The article can also be a source of knowledge for lawyers, policemen and expert witnesses in this area.

The study was planned to analyze traffic behavior undertaken by drivers, including the emerging so-called awareness gaps. The study was conducted in Poland, and 211 drivers participated in it. The results show many important relationships that could form the basis for proposing effective social campaigns on road safety, including increasing the awareness of drivers as those who have a real impact on its improvement. The analyses confirm the existence of the awareness gap in the examined target group. They also show what kinds of behaviors are considered by drivers to be risky and what kinds of behaviors are aggressive. Moreover, they show the percentage of undesirable behaviors in road traffic and indicate which behaviors are considered by drivers to be the most threatening.
