Strategia ze swojej natury jest zwrócona ku przyszłości. Prognozowanie, przewidywanie charakteru przyszłych wojen od co najmniej półtora wieku stanowi podstawę koncepcji strategicznych, doktryn i planów wojennych oraz budowania systemów wojskowych. Wraz z zakończeniem zimnej wojny wręcz palącą potrzebą okazało się gruntowne zweryfikowanie dotychczasowych wizji i prognoz. Potrzebę pogłębionej refleksji nad charakterem wojen przyszłości wzmagała i – paradoksalnie – nieco przesłaniała konieczność objaśnienia istoty/gramatyki kolejnych, współczesnych konfliktów zbrojnych. Liczne teorie i „teorie” mające zaspokoić zapotrzebowanie skupiają się jednak nie tyle na nieco odleglejszej przyszłości, ile na teraźniejszości. Autor prezentuje swoje przemyślenia oraz rezultaty studiów i dociekań badawczych nad wojnami ery informacyjnej.

By its nature, strategy is oriented towards the future. Forecasting and predicting the character of future wars have been the basis of strategic concepts, doctrines, war plans and building military systems for at least 150 years. When the Cold War ended, it became obvious that the past visions and prognoses must be urgently and thoroughly verified. The need for an in-depth reflection on the character of future wars has been increased and, paradoxically, somewhat overshadowed by the necessity to explain the nature/grammar of the next, currently ongoing armed conflicts. Numerous theories and "theories," which are to satisfy the need, focus not so much on the more distant future, but on the present. The author presents his thoughts as well as results of scientific research and studies on wars of the information era.

The article is a lecture containing the history and evaluation of Polish defence throught. The author established the following evaluation criteria: the number and importance of people dealing with defence, significance and activities of scientific - research centres, the number, importance and range of publications in the area of defence. A particular attention has been drawn to distinguished intellectuals, beginning with hetman (commander-in-chief) Jan Tarnowski and conducting with contemporary military thought experts, the most outstanding ones, according to the author, include: Franciszek Skibiński, Bolesław Chocha, Kazimierz Nożko and Stanisław Koziej. The current state of Polish defence thought has been discussed in the further part of the article; the most important research centres thet develop military studies and research institutions that create defence - technological science have been analysed. The author, as the commandant of the National Defence University, focused on the university and its scientific developments.
