The development of the Netherlands international airport Schiphol has been the subject of fierce political debate for several decades. One of the considerations has been the safety of the population living around the airport. In the debate about the acceptability of the risks associated with the air traffic above the Netherlands the need has arisen to gain a more thorough understanding of the accident genesis in air traffic, with the ultimate aim of improving the safety situation in air traffic in general and around Schiphol in particular. To this aim are a search effort has started to develop causal models for air traffic risks in the espectation that these will ultimately give the insight needed.

Rozbudowa międzynarodowego portu lotniczego Schiphol w Holandii jest przedmiotem zaciętych debat politycznych od dziesięcioleci. Jednym z podnoszonych problemów jest bezpieczeństwo ludności zamieszkującej tereny wokół lotniska. Podczas debat dotyczących akceptacji ryzyka związanego z ruchem lotniczym nad Holandią, pojawiła się potrzeba lepszego zrozumienia przyczyn wypadków lotniczych, z punktu widzenia poprawy bezpieczeństwa w ruchu lotniczym w ogólności i w okolicy portu lotniczego Schiphol w szczególności. Aby zrealizować ten cel rozpoczęto badania naukowe zmierzające do opracowania modeli przyczynowych ryzyka w ruchu lotniczym w przekonaniu , że pozwolą one na właściwe rozpoznanie problemu.
