Inflowing saline waters of the Major Baltic Inflow (MBI) in 2014 were recorded in the Baltic Proper in January 2015. After 12 years of stagnation, this inflow brought highly saline (about 20) waters into the Bornholm Basin. As in the previous inflow in January 2003, saltwater moved in the near-bottom layer with a current speed of approx. 25 cm s−1. This paper presents data collected in January and February 2015 and compares them to earlier records from 2000 to 2014.

W badaniach webometrycznych tych instytucji poddano analizie działalność naukową polskich bibliotek uczelnianych w latach 2010-2015. Wśród badanych zagadnień uwzględniono udział i organizację konferencji oraz działalność wydawniczą o charakterze naukowym.

Academic libraries are a place, which not only collects and provides books, but also takes a part in scientific communication. It is a specific type of communication in which academic libraries have very important status. The main goal of the article is an answer to the question how people and institutions carry out their functions in scientific communication. A starting point for the further considerations will be definition of scientific communication and attempt to determine the status and role of academic libraries in the process of social communication - and beyond - scientific communication. The article includes results of webometric research of these institutions. The author checked scientific activity of Polish libraries at universities in period 2010-2015. Analysis included following issues: organization and participation in conferences, publishing activity etc.

Changes in the basic physical properties of selected areas of the Baltic Proper were analysed on the basis of the results of a 12-year series of high-resolution measurements collected during cruises of r/v "Oceania". The high-resolution CTD sections covered three main basins: the Bornholm Basin, Słupsk Furrow and Gdańsk Basin. Positive temperature trends of 0.11 and 0.16C year-1 were observed in the surface and deep layers respectively. The salinity trend was also positive. The rise in the air temperature has probably caused the increase in surface water temperature, while advection has been of greater significance in the deep layer. The increase in salinity coincides with the more frequent occurrence of small and medium-size inflows through the Danish Straits, even though large inflows are evidently less frequent than used to be the case. The seasonal variability of temperature in the water column was analysed. The phase shift in the seasonal evolution with depth is described. The maximum temperature shift in the waters investigated varies from 32 to 38 days.

The first baroclinic Rossby radius of deformation (R1) is a fundamental horizontal scale of mesoscale processes. This scale is important for planning both numerical modelling and study areas. R1 was computed on the basis of an 11-year series of high resolution CTD measurements collected during r/v "Oceania" cruises. The data set covered the three main basins of the Baltic Proper: the Bornholm Basin (BB), the Słupsk Furrow (SF) and the Gdańsk Basin (GB). The smallest mean value of R1 was found in the Gdańsk Basin (5.2 km), the largest one in the Bornholm Deep (7.3 km). The seasonal variability of R1 is lower in the western basin than in the eastern one. The seasonal cycle of R1 may be broken by extreme events, e.g. main Baltic inflows (MBI) of saline water. The inflowing water rebuilds the vertical stratification in the southern Baltic Sea and dramatically changes the R1 values. The difference of R1 between a stagnation period and an inflow situation is shown on the basis of observations made during 2002-2003. The main inflow occurred in winter, after ten years of stagnation, and the very low values of R1 (about 4 km) changed to very high ones (more than 9 km). Analysis of stagnation and saltwater inflow events may throw light on the value of R1 in future climatic scenarios. The potential influence of climate change on Baltic Sea salinity, especially a decrease in MBI activity, may change the baroclinic Rossby radius of deformation and the mesoscale dynamics. Values of R1 are expected to be lower in the future climate than those measured nowadays.
