Instrumental and macroseismic data of a sequence of local earthquakes recorded in 1995 in the Western Carpathians (the region of Podhale, northernmost part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt) have been analysed. The earthquakes occurring in the area of the Orawa-Nowy Targ depression are the evidence that tectonic faults in this area are still seismically active. An earthquake of M = 4.1 was re-corded there in November 2004.

The catalogue of earthquakes in Poland, based on the 1999 common catalogue for the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia, and the recently supplemented version of the national catalogue of earthquakes in Poland, is presented. Seismicity maps of Poland for different periods are discussed at large, alongside with the spatial and temporal distribution of earthquakes. Earthquake hazard maps for the return period of 1000 years, in terms of intensities sensu SCHENK et al. (2000) are presented and discussed.
