A high molecular weight natural polyester type biopolymer, based on renewable resources and produced in a fermentation process, can be used in various types of coatings for gloss reduction. Matting results in aqueous, solvent-borne and 100 % solids radiation curing coating wood and industrial coating formulations will be highlighted in comparison to silica and wax based matting additives. The new technology of matting provides effective gloss reduction in many systems, without significantly increasing the viscosity, and not negatively impacting leveling, transparency and air release characteristics. Additional positive side effects are the improvement of the scratch and abrasion resistance and soft-touch properties of the coating film, together with a pronounced anti-slip effect. The new matting agent is also completely biodegradable.
