Continuing years of experience with previous years (Winogrady 2005, Sabbioneta 2006, Zamość, 2008) at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Technology managed to organize the next international science camp, which was attended by Polish and Italian students. Previous workshops were the result of design collaboration with the University of Milan and its subsidiary in Mantua. In 2010, the Polish-Italian relations was able to expand cooperation with Facolta di Architettura Valle Giulia at the Universite degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza. Last year's edition was held from 22 to 29 May 2010 and took place at the premises of the Faculty of Architecture Vale Giulia in the north of Rome, about 2.5 km from the Piazza del Popolo and the adjacent land the Villa Borghese. This location was not accidental, since the students had to address the revitalization of the area Accademia delle Valle - an area where there are foreign academies, the seat of the faculty, Galeria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna and the Etruscan Museum and the Embassy of the Polish and Bulgarian. The task involved so it is very important for the culture an the context of the area. The workshop was attended by the following professors: Maciej Janowski, Adam Nadolny, Julia Ratajczak, Laura Bertoni and the assistants: Agata Kuchta i Chiara Ilchieza. The Polish Faculty of Architecture was represented by students of the thirdh and fourth year: Alicja Bogalecka, Michał Ciesielski, Łukasz Gierszewski, Anna Goszczyńska, Karolina Grzęda, Anna Kryszczyńska, Andrzej Majcher, Tomasz Mor, Tomasz Nowicki, Beata Opończewska, Magda Pachocka, Maciej Piechocki, Sylwia Snuszka, Zuzanna Sprogis and Katarzyna Wojtczak. A group of students of La Sapienza was by far less numerous, and consisted mainly of students of fourth and fifth years: Chiara Angelici, Francesca Bove, liana Habib, Veronica Ioli, Valentina Lasagna, Pietro Pavoni, Francesco Perri, Alessandro Quadrelli and Paolo Venturella. Students were faced with problems of the site, which does not claim perfection, nor has clear elements of crystallizing, despite the presence of the objects it contains important both functionally and architecturally. Viale delle Belle Arti cuts into the development, disrupting the readability of the compositional axis derived from the facade of the Gallery, and continued in the park, whose paths lead to the Piazza del Popollo. Students in the course of design work done dozens of photographs and sketches. They formed five Italian Polish teams, whose task was to design and provide alternatives for the area of Valle Giulia. Depending on the results of analysis of site formed ideas of the individual teams to at least partially solve the problems of the given area. A short time that students had to complete the task did not permit the detailed presentation of the selected solutions. Because of this, the teams decided to focus on the clear visibility of the main objectives of the urban and architectoniczal composition and forming the spatial-supported guidelines, without going into detailed solutions. This way of working was to teach students how to design in synthetic way, in which the emphasis is on creating ideas, not the solution in detail- All projects shown during the final presentation handling the contemporary language of architectural forms. In designing the site with a clearly defined cultural context and urban students are not focused on restoring historical forms, but the creation of tension resulting from the bold statements of existing conventional buildings with new, abstract forms. However, they did so with great sensitivity and sensitivity to space and architectonic scale.

Przedmiotem niniejszego projektu była rewitalizacja i waloryzacja obszaru Valle delie Accademie (Valle Giulia) przy Villa Borghese oraz na północny zachód od stacji Termini. Ze względu na znajdujące się na tym terenie budynki Museo Nazionale di Villa Giulia, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Wydziału Architektury uniwersytetu La Sapienza oraz akademie (m.in. Accademia Britannica, Accademia di Romania, Instituto Storico Olandese, Accademia Belgia), założono, że docelowo ma to być dzielnica kulturalno-muzealna Rzymu. Całe założenie projektowe opracowano z myślą o nowej funkcji. Rozważono również połączenie opracowywanego terenu z dzielnicą sportowo-kulturalną z Auditorium Parco delia Música Roma oraz Palazzetto delio Sport, znajdującą się na północ od rewitalizowa-nego terenu.

The workshop project contains revitalization and valorization of the area near Valle delie Accademie (Valle Güila), situated next to Villa Borghese, in the north-east of Termini station. On account of a museum, academies, galleries and The Faculty of Architecture there, the authorities of Rome decided to convert this not so popular district to the new cultural quaiier, which will be connected with sports and musical area, situated in the northeast. The analisys of the particular layers of the urban structure, such as greenery, communication and building structure, show the main problems of the area, which concern traffic, car parks, disorganised space and historical axis and also lack of attractive points. The area is composed of two historical axis parallel to each other and one perpendicular, leading to Villa Guilia, where big traffic clashes with pedestrians. The area is devided into public and semi-public space with academies. This composition is unfortunately unclear and the idea of the project is to restore order in space thanks to putting new elements. To solve the problem with communication, the project introduces underground way between Museo Nazionale di Villa Giulia and park of Villa Borghese with space for car parks along it. This solution allows to make pedestrianized street and tram line on the ground and create quiet and attrictive space for users. Futhermore, new underground station in the north-west of the area and restoration of the old tram in return for removing bus stop from the oval square have been took into the consideration. The new changes introduce integration in historical space. The whole area is divided into three parts: cultural part with all museums, educational containing academis and The Faculty of Architecture and recreational part with water elements, gastronomy points and spaces for students. New functions of areas are available and flexible for people in every age. The one of the most noticeable drawbacks for students is lack of space for relax, du-ing breakes and for designing together. This problem was solved by a study pavilion, situated opposite building of The Faculty of Architecture. The shape of this is really simple without any decotration so as not to interfere with contemplation about the architecture around. It has flexible space designed for working together and also it can be adapted to lectures. The building is connected with recreation part with the taraces, which levels go down to the pedestrianized street below. Between two of them in the slope, there is a café. The terraces can be closed with mobile glass walls in winter. Moreover, the project contains mobile green roofs, which can be adjusted to the exposition of the sun during seasons of the year. The recreational space contains rectangular water elements and small architecture, situated parallelly to main direction in order to emphasise the axis. There is also equestrian monument, which is equipped with illumination. In the middle of the district there is an oval square, where the recreational area is connected to the educational space in the south. In this space the gastronomy was designed. The idea of it was to create the oval building in the part of the greenery next to the square, in order to not distort the historical circular square. The building is simple and connected with the tram stop by the oval roof, which refers to the shape of the square. The fundamental problem of this area is lack of the clearness of the composition. The south end of the axis, between British Academy and the other academies, do not attract pedestrians' attention, because the buildings behind it dominate the view and the axis is unclear then. There is the same situation with the equestrian monument. In project, the square near the Academia di Romania is the exhibition space with the exhibition walls in burgundy colour and different levels of the floor. The panels for exhibitions are the background of the monument and the end of the axis, which makes the compositon clear. The small architecture was created to unite the whole space, emphisised the axis by the-same colour and modular elements and also introduced recreational components for users. These elements are simple, so as to integrate with historical structure. The rectangular simple light-colour banches have a cutted space for burgundy flowerpot, which slightly isolates people. Mobile decorative elements for play are created by two modules: one as pot for grennery and the other as a rotational box, putted on one-meter-high-steel rod. The boxes with plants are in light colours and the others are in burgundy. The elements of the small architecture unite composition of the axis making it more attractive.

Tematem opracowania jest dzielnica Valle Giulia znajdująca się na północ od śródmieścia Rzymu. Głównym celem było zaprojektowanie „miejsca", które miałoby stać się czytelnym znakiem w tej części miasta. Zadanie okazało się niezwykle trudne, biorąc pod uwagę nie tylko wstępny rekonesans zastanej przestrzeni, ale również konfrontację „polskiej szkoły architektury" ze szkołą „rzymską".

Valle Giulia is a district situated in the North of Rome, right next to well-known Villa Borghese. The district consists of many cultural buildings like National Gallery of Modern Art, Etruscans Museum or Academies - Foreign Institutes in Rome from United Kingdom, Belgium, and Netherlands etc. Another advantage of Valle Giulia is unbelievable, let's say, the one of a kind landscape. At first sight the district seems to be sustainable part of structure as Rome is. Unfortunately, especially during the evening and night, there are a lot of sociological problems like drug addicts and prostitution. As far as we are concerned that district is supposed to function in a different way. It should accomplish mechanism of typical Italian public space. That's why we decided to provide to Valle Giulia that, what make the people - tourists, citizens feel comfortable and happy. The answer is public square with extraordinary type of fountain as exhibition pavilion. We believe that this element in whole urban structure could the pretext to cause better social mechanisms. Attractive space needs to have some kind of "catchy product" to be enough interesting for potential "catch basin" -users. We think that Waterfall Exhibition Pavilion with lists of other performances and events could be the good beginning of changes in this area. The Hanging Bridge of Art is the second part of project. We designed it to make the circulation, between Villa Borghese and northern part of Valle Giulia, more comfortable. But the bridge is not only to transfer people from one side to another. It is supposed to be an invitation to National Gallery because it has platforms along path where some of the museum's stuff may be exhibited. The main assumption was to put into Valle Giulia suggestive landscaping architecture to make that area more visible on the map of Eternal City. We believe that our purpose was successfully reached.
