Since modern enterprises have to challenge increasing social and economical expectations, including health and safety assurance, authors of the article attempt to formulate general guidelines for companies that want to decrease number of accidents and increase occupational safety level. The authors also attempted to verify the theory of the accident pyramid formulated by Heinrich, through the study of the relationship between the number of accidents at work and the number of registered near-misses in the selected company.Since modern enterprises have to challenge increasing social and economical expectations, including health and safety assurance, authors of the article attempt to formulate general guidelines for companies that want to decrease number of accidents and increase occupational safety level. W artykule przedstawiono położenie obszaru górniczego Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego 'Dębieńsko', scharakteryzowano budowę geologiczną złoża. Au-tor omówił z kolei zagrożenia naturalne, występujące w opisywanym obszarze górniczym, takie jak: zagrożenia wodne (I stopień), metanowe, pożarowe, wy-buchem pyłu węglowego, temperaturowe, radiacyjne. Charakterystykę jakościową węgli kopalni określono na podstawie wyni-ków analiz prób bruzdowych oraz prób rdzeniowych. W rozdziale 'Udokumen-towanie jakości i ilości zasobów, stwierdzono, że na dzień 31 grudnia 1997 r. zasoby bilansowe wynoszą 583 406 tyś. ton. Średnia grubość udokumentowa-nych pokładów wynosi 0,95 m a pokładów bilansowych 1,13 m. Warunki gcologiczno-gómicze w kopalni 'Dębieńsko' są trudne. Kopalnia ta posiada jednak na czynnych poziomach wystarczającą bazę zasobową, aby przez wiele lat - pod warunkiem kontynuowania działań restrukturyzacyjnych -być producentem węgla o wysokich parametrach jakościowych wymaganych przez odbiorców tak krajowych jak i zagranicznych.

The article presents the location of mining area of ,,DQbiensko' mine and characterises geological structure of deposit. The author discussed in turn natu-ral hazards occurring in the discussed mining area as: water hazard (I degree), methane, fire, dust explosion, temperature and radiation hazards. Quality characteristics of coals of the mine has been determined of the basis of the gotten and core samples analyses. The chapter ..Documentation of quality and quantity of deposits' states that balance deposits as of 31 December 1997 amount to 583 406 Thos. tons. Average depth of documented seams is 0,95 m and proven seams 1,13m. Geological - mining conditions of coal extraction in ..Debiensko' mine are difficult. The mine has, anyhow, satisfactory base of deposits at active horizons to be able - provided restructuring activity is continued - to be the producer of coal of high quality parameters required by both home and foreign customers.

The article refers to the genesis of a mechanized longwall complex for thin coal beds and discusses the indvidual machines and equipment belonging to the complex. The technical characteristics are also given.
