Computer aided and 3D printing in pre-operative planning of orbital reconstruction surgery

This article describes the example of a computer aided and 3D print of a patient’s fractured orbital preoperational reconstruction surgery planning. On basis of a medical visualization a triangular model of the facial part of the skull with the fractured orbital has been developed. Using the haptic voxel modeling tools the model has been improved and next the model of the reconstructed orbital has been made. This model served to build a physical model. Using the physical model of the orbital the reconstruction mesh has been made which was then implanted into the patient’s skull. The entire surgery was completed with no complications and the patient regained proper sight.

W artykule przedstawiono, na przykładzie trzech przypadków medycznych, procesy wykonywania modeli wirtualnych i fizycznych fragmentów twarzowej części czaszki. Obiektami wejściowymi do realizacji procesu były obrazy DICOM pochodzące z obrazowania medycznego. Na ich podstawie uzyskiwano triangularne modele 3D. Modele te – po wykonaniu transformacji strukturalnych – były edytowane za pomocą systemów klasy CAx w celu uzyskania pożądanej postaci. Przeznaczeniem tych modeli był wydruk 3D. Wykonane modele fizyczne posłużyły do planowania zabiegów medycznych.

The article, based on three examples of medical cases, presents the processes of performing virtual and physical models of the facial skeleton fragments. The input objects for the process were DICOM images derived from medical imaging. 3D triangular models were obtained on this basis. These models, after carrying out structural trans-formations, were edited by means of CAx class systems to obtain the desired form. The purpose of these models was the 3D print. The obtained physical models were used for planning the medical treatments.
