Experimental results of effects of thermomechanical couplings occurring in shape memory polymer subjected to tension are presented. Stress-strain curves were recorded by testing machine, while their related temperature changes were measured with infrared camera. The mechanical and thermal characteristics were used to investigate the polymer properties. Three various stages were distinguished during the deformation process. The first, elastic, is accompanied by a drop in the specimen temperature; the second, plastic, is associated with change of the material structure and the temperature increase; the third stage, related to the specimen rupture and damage mechanisms, is accompanied by the significant increase in temperature.

Content available remote Three-way actuation of shape memory composite
EN
The SMC belt composed of two kinds of SMAs with different phase transformation temperatures and SMP, was fabricated and the three-way (reciprocating) movement and recovery force in bending actuation were investigated. The results obtained can be summarized as follows. 1) The three-way bending movement was achived during heating and cooling, based on the characteristics of the SMA tapes and the SMP tape. 2) The recovery force decreased at first and increased thereafter during heating and decreased during cooling. The recovery force was roughly estimated by the proposed model. 3) The development and application of multi-functional SMCs with simple structure for three-dimensional actuators are highly expected.

Content available remote The Basic Research for the New Compass System Using Latest MEMS
EN
This paper demonstrates basic research for a new compass system using latest MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) sensors for small vessels. In 2007, MEMS Electrostatically Gyro (ESG) was introduced by TOKYO KEIKI which is a Japanese company. This sensor accuracy has dramatically improved compared to vibration types. For example, instability has been improved 10 times more than the vibration types. The reproducibility was tested and maximum difference was 0.55 [deg/sec] in the field test. The MEMS-ESG could detect the relative angles as accurate as GPS compass in short term use. Even though sen-sor accuracy has been improved, an improvement of another 10 times is needed to detect the earth’s turn rate. Because of this a second system is required for a complete compass system. A celestial navigation system is one of the possibilities to complement this. Traditionally the sextant has been used for measuring the altitude, but it has some human errors and difficult to measure continuously. Therefore, it might be useful to get sun altitude and direction automatically. In this thesis, the sun altitude and direction detecting system using camera devices are studied. Using 350×288 resolution camera and a radio-controlled clock, the sun movement was detected 5’14” per pixels and 2’16”. per pixels for the altitude and direction respectively. Although this is a basic research for an integrated system, the data should have an enormous affect upon future research.

Content available remote Study on One Mile SART
EN
From a point that should be improved further in present SART (Search and Rescue Radar Transponder), the size, the number, and the cost were enumerated. Some types of SART developed to solve them in Japan are introduced in this paper. That is automatically operating SART, circular polarization SART and so on. In the process, it was clarified that circular polarization is effective. In addition, One Mile SART using circular polarization was mentioned. It is SART miniaturized instead of limiting the function, because all crews and passengers can always carry the small and light SART. The parts were made for trial purposes and the performance was confirmed.

Content available remote Can Proofs be Animated by Games?
EN
Proof animation is a way of executing proofs to find errors in the formalization of proofs. It is intended to be "testing in proof engineering". Although the realizability interpretation as well as the functional interpretation based on limit-computations were introduced as means for proof animation, they were unrealistic as an architectural basis for actual proof animation tools. We have found a game theoretic semantics corresponding to these interpretations, which is likely to be the right architectural basis for proof animation.

“Flameless combustion” of lean to ultra lean mixtures, supported by hightemperature burned gas, can resolve the dilemma between complete combustion versus ultralow NOx emissions in gas turbine combustors. The characteristic of NOx emissions and combustion in “leanlean” twostage combustion was investigated for premixedprevaporized keroseneair mixtures using a coaxial flow configuration. A circular jet of secondary keroseneair mixtures of lean to ultralean compositions were injected into the primary hot burned gas prepared by combustion of lean mixtures on an annular perforated flame holder The progress of reaction and NOx formation in the combustion tube were measured for nonswirled and swirled secondary jets. The conditions required for complete combustion of the secondary mixtures were defined for various ratios of secondary to primary air flow rates.

Content available remote A trial to apply Fe-Al intermetallic alloys to brake rotors
EN
Fe-Al intermetallic alloys, FeAl- and Fe3Al-based, were tried to be applied to brake rotors for automobile use. FeAl revealed better tribological properties but lower ductility than cast iron which had been conventionally used for brake rotors. Then a new FeAl-based alloy containing small amounts of Mo, Zr, C and B was proposed to improve ductility and comparatively good results were obtained. Ti addition to Fe3Al improved the tribological properties, especially at elevated temperatures. Since their temperature dependence was quite different from that of cast iron, new applications are expected. In order to obtain guidelines for producing better tribo-materials, trials to correlate mechanical properties with tribological ones were also made. A very clear correlation was found between the strain hardening rate and the wear rate, while other mechanical properties such as yield strength and hardness showed no clear correlation. This suggests the importance of dynamic mechanical properties in taking correlation with tribological properties
