The house is a universal necessity that responds to basic human needs. However these needs evolve and change with society. The future dwelling must be environmentally sound, flexible and capable of adapting to the different needs of today’s evolving population; but above all it must remain affordable. These parameters will be analyzed and juxtaposed on their overall affect on the design of tomorrow’s dwelling drawing from examples and statistical data from UK and the USA.

Potrzeba integracji programu zrównoważenia w szkolnictwie przyczyniła się do stworzenia kilku nowych przedmiotów i zrewidowania istniejącego harmonogramu zajęć. Rozpoczęto także badania, które mają dostarczyć odpowiedzi na pytanie, co składa się na nauczanie projektowania zrównoważonego. Nauczanie zrównoważenia wymaga przeprowadzenia dyskusji na temat istotnych kwestii środowiskowych, z którymi zmaga się dzisiejszy świat, ale też znalezienia rozwiązań praktycznych, które można by zastosować w dydaktyce poprzez integrację rzeczywistych sytuacji. Badania dotyczą efektywności integracji nauczania problemowego jako narzędzia dydaktycznego dla segmentu skupiającego się na projektowaniu miast zrównoważonych w Szkole Architektury i Szkole Projektowania i Zarządzania Środowiskiem przy Uniwersytecie Portsmouth i dostarczają cennych wniosków opartych na ocenie pracy studentów oraz obserwacji współpracowników.

The need for integration of the sustainability agenda in education has led to the development of several new courses and revision of existing curriculum. Research has also been initiated in an attempt to provide answers to the question of what constitutes a sustainable design education. The teaching of sustainability involves discussing the serious environmental issues facing the world today, but also the practical solutions that we could apply by integrating real-world situations into our teaching and learning. This research investigates the effectiveness of integrating problem-based learning as a teaching tool for a unit focusing on design for Sustainable Cities in the School of Architecture and the School of Environmental Design and Management in the University of Portsmouth and it draws some valuable conclusions based on students' unit evaluation and peer observation.
