The capabilities of the 100-kW IPG-4 plasmatron in terms of the optimal test conditions for simulation of the re-entry stagnation heating of the Pre-X and EXPERT vehicles are presented. Test requirements for the peak-heating parts of the Pre-X and EXPERT trajectories have motivated the different technical approaches to expand the IPG-4 capabilities at the low and high pressure borders of the operating envelope. The simulation of the stagnation point heat transfer is achieved for both re-entry vehicles close to re-entry conditions in terms of the total enthalpy, stagnation pressure and velocity gradient. Catalytic efficiency of SiC surface with respect to surface recombination of oxygen and nitrogen atoms is predicted close to the EXPERT re-entry conditions.
