Proper adjustment of shoes to the dimensions and shape of the feet has decisive effect on the health status of entire lower extremity and even a posture of the body. A significant factor is a relationship between the foot length and the internal length of footwear. It is commonly accepted that a shoe must be longer than the foot however the magnitude of this difference - the optimal toe allowance - is still open to discussion. In the present paper there are presented results of preliminary investigations of changes in the length of children's feet resulting from age and load during ambulation. The obtained data were analysed and compared with results from earlier publications and there has been being proposed a preliminary value of toe allowance for the children's footwear.

In the article there are presented results of the most recent measurements (carried out in 2008 - 2009) of the children 's feet, with particular attention to the longitudinal arch 's alignment, which was determined with the Clarke's angle. Comparison of obtained data with results of researches carried out in 1976 and 1999 revealed that values of the Clare's angle in children 4-6 years old measured in 2008 and 2009 (AZS) are notably lower than in the previous research. It indicates that the process of the longitudinal arch's development retards over the age of 6 years.

In the lecture there was presented development of methods for examination of the feet, from the simplest measurements with a tape as well as various methods to make foot prints, photos till using scanners. Digital photography gives an opportunity to obtain profiles and cross-sections of the feet. Scanners make possible to analyse the foot as a 3D structure and to obtain cross-section of whichever place of the foot and to take measurements. With reference to all of these methods, there were presented opportunities to use obtained results both for construction of lasts as well as footwear.
