‘KRAB’ – new capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces

The implementation of 155 mm self-propelled howitzers ‘Krab’ into the Missile and Artillery Forces significantly improve their capabilities. Apart the howitzer, the battalion fire module ‘Regina’ consists of specialized command, reconnaissance, support and ammunition vehicles. The caliber of the howitzer adjusted to NATO standards allows for the application of the common ammunition, including precision-guided, with the range up to 40 km, which will enable striking the important targets in the enemy’s rear combat zone. An artillery battalion (battery) equipped with the self-propelled howitzer ‘Krab’ owing to usage of the precision-guided munitions during the engagement will gain unprecedented capabilities with regards to impacting a target. Moreover, the battalion will be able to successfully fulfill tasks, which until recently could be executed by a general-military commander with the support of anti-tank reserves, tank subunits, special forces or tactical surface-to-surface missiles. The paper proposes organizational structures of the ‘Krab’ artillery battalion, variants of order of battle and methods of fire tasks execution.

Autorzy omawiają możliwości wojsk rakietowych i artylerii Sił Zbrojnych RP oraz rozpatrują, jaką rolę powinna odgrywać artyleria w warunkach współczesnego pola walki. Na podstawie analizy i oceny jej obecnego stanu oraz programów modernizacyjnych wskazują najważniejsze obszary koniecznych zmian, mających na celu zwiększenie potencjału bojowego tego rodzaju wojsk. Na potrzeby analizy wykorzystali wnioski i doświadczenia z ostatnich konfliktów zbrojnych, zwłaszcza zaś z działań wojennych na wschodzie Ukrainy, podczas których artyleria odgrywa główną rolę we wsparciu ogniowym. Artyleria jest relatywnie tanim, w wysokim stopniu skutecznym i najbardziej dostępnym środkiem wsparcia ogniowego w polskich siłach zbrojnych. Zmodernizowana i dostosowana do standardów NATO, pozwoli istotnie zwiększyć potencjał bojowy wojsk lądowych Sił Zbrojnych RP.

The authors discuss potential of missile and artillery forces of the Polish Armed Forces and artillery’s role on contemporary battlefield. Based on the analysis and assessment of its present status and modernization programs, they point to the fields requiring necessary changes to increase combat potential of these troops. They analyzed the conclusions and experience gained during recent armed conflicts, particularly during war activities in eastern Ukraine, where artillery plays the leading role in fire support. Artillery is relatively inexpensive, highly effective and most accessible fire support in the Polish Armed Forces. Modernized and customized for NATO standards should allow for a significant increase of combat potential of the Polish Land Forces.
