The aim of the article is to examine how the textile industry in the Łódź Voivodeship has evolved in the context of building smart regional specialisations. The ideas underlying the concept of smart regional specialisation in order to use this foundation to outline the trends in the development and transformation of the textile industry in Central and Eastern European countries are described. The transformation of the innovative capacity of this industry in the Łódź region is shown. The research used an analysis of existing materials, statistical methods and LQ location indicators. Specific territorial capital accumulated for over two centuries and encapsulated in tradition, knowledge, skills, and economic relations in the Łódź region has provided a unique economic potential for the development of the textile industry. The period of rapid transformation was followed by stabilisation and the reconstruction of its potential and building smart specialisation, which will become the impetus for regional competitiveness.

Land trusts as a complementary solution to nature conservation system in Poland

This article is a new voice in the debate on the future of nature conservation in Poland. It develops the subject of grass-roots initiatives in the context of the most important contemporary challenges related to area-based nature conservation. In this context, the article introduces land trusts - one of the tools that seems to meet the expectations of social organisations involved in environmental protection. The article's description of the potential place of land trusts in the Polish system of nature conservation is complemented by a review of the seed forms currently emerging without systemic support and by an analysis of the methods used in other countries to finance such initiatives. The research methods used for this type of analysis are heuristic methods based on a comprehensive literature review and a detailed analysis of practical examples and solutions. In conclusion, this article confirms the validity of conducting further research on land trusts as a possible complement to the nature conservation system in Poland.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi nowy głos w debacie dotyczącej przyszłości systemu ochrony przyrody w Polsce. Rozwija on wątek inicjatyw oddolnych w kontekście najważniejszych współczesnych wyzwań związanych z obszarową ochroną przyrody przybliżając jednocześnie w tym kontekście land trusty – jedno z narzędzi, które wydaje się spełniać społeczne oczekiwania. Znajdujący się w artykule opis potencjalnego miejsca land trustów w polskim systemie ochrony przyrody został uzupełniony o przegląd form zalążkowych powstających obecnie oddolnie, bez systemowego wsparcia oraz o analizę stosowanych w innych krajach sposobów finansowania tego typu inicjatyw. Metody badawcze stosowane przy tego typu szerokich, postulatywnych analizach to metody heurystyczne, bazujące na wielowątkowym przeglądzie literatury oraz szczegółowej analizie praktycznych przykładów i rozwiązań. W podsumowaniu niniejszego artykułu potwierdzono zasadność prowadzenia dalszych badań nad land trustami jako możliwym uzupełnieniem systemu ochrony przyrody w Polsce.

Circular economy approach in revitalization: an opportunity for effective urban regeneration

The paper seeks to identify challenges and present opportunities the cities can take from applying circular economy (CE) based solutions in revitalization processes. In particular, the analysis focuses on revitalization areas and activities, which open up natural opportunities for implementing such CE based solutions. Successful examples of revitalization efforts undertaken in European cities illustrate and confirm the appropriateness and purposefulness of restoring degraded urban areas by transforming them into circular districts. For the purpose of the paper we conducted desk research and analysed the following sources: (1) subject matter literature, which we subjected to critical analysis; (2) reports and expert opinions drawn up by European and global institutions and organisations; (3) strategic documents of cities, which apply the CE idea in their revitalization efforts. The paper is the first attempt undertaken on grounds of Polish subject matter literature to combine CE related activities with urban regeneration.
