New mixed-ligand complexes of general formulae Ln(4-bpy)(CCl2HCOO)3źnH2O (4-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, Ln = lanthanide(III), n = 1 for Gd, n = 2 for Tb, Ho) and Tm(4-bpy)1.5(CCl2HCOO)3ź3H2O have been prepared and characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, IR spectroscopy and conductivity studies. The thermal properties of complexes were investigated in air atmosphere. During the heating the complexes decompose via intermediates to the oxides: Ln2O3 and Tb4O7. The principal volatile products of pyrolytic decomposition of Ho(III) and Tm(III) complexes, detected by a coupled TG-MS system are: C+, H2O+, CO2 + and species containing halogens and nitrogen. IR spectra suggest that 4-bpy and dichloroacetate groups are coordinated with Ln(III) ions.

A novel mixed-ligand complexes with empirical formulae: Ln(4-bpy)(CCl2HCOO)3.H2O (where:Ln =Y, Ce,Nd, Pr andEu, 4-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) were prepared and characterized by chemical and elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and conductivity measurements (in methanol, dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide). Analysis of the powder diffraction patterns showed that the obtained complexes are crystalline and isostructural compounds. The thermal properties of complexes in the solid state were studied under non-isothermal conditions in air atmosphere. During heating the complexes decompose via intermediate products to the oxides: Ln2O3 (Y, Nd, Eu), Pr6O11 and CeO2. A coupled TG-MS system was used to analyse principal volatile thermal decomposition (or fragmentation) products evolved during pyrolysis of Pr(III) and Nd(III) complexes. In air major profiles for ion currents are observed with m/z = 12, 18, 29, 30, 35, 36, 44, 47 amongst others.

The new mixed-ligand complexes containing bipyridine isomers and lactates with formulae Mn(2,4'-bpy)2(lact)2'2H2O, Cu(2,4'-bpy) 2(lact)2, Cd(2,4'-bpy)2(lact)2 . 2H2O, Cd(4-bpy)(lact)2 . 2H2O (where: 2,4_-bpy = 2,4'-bipyridine, 4-bpy = 4,4 '-bipyridine, lact = CH3 CH(OH)COO-) were obtained. These complexes and metal lactates Mn(lact)2 . 2H2O, Cu(lact)2 . 2H2O and Cd(lact)2źH2O were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, conductivity and magnetic measurements. The thermal behaviour of all compounds was studied by thermal analysis (TG, DTG, DTA) in air. A coupled TG/MS system was used to analyse the principal volatile products of thermolysis and fragmentation processes of Cu(II) compounds in air and argon.

New mixed-ligand complexes of the following stoichiometric formulae: Ni(2-bpy)2- (CBr2HCOO)2.5H2O, Ni(4-bpy)2(CBrH2COO)2.2H2O, Ni(4-bpy)2(CBr2HCOO)2 .2H2O, Ni(2,4'-bpy)2(CBr2HCOO)2 .4H2O, Zn(2-bpy)(CBrH2COO)2 .H2O and Zn(4-bpy)(CBr2HCOO)2.H2O (where: 2,2'-bipyridine = 2-bpy, 4,4'-bipyridine = 4-bpy and 2,4'-bipyridine = 2,4'-bpy) were isolated in pure state. The IR and VIS spectra, molar conductivity, magnetic moments are discussed. Thermal behaviours of complexes were studied by means of DTA, DTG, TG techniques under static air conditions. During heating the complexes decompose via different intermediate products. The final product of nickel(II) complexes pyrolysis was NiO; in the case of zinc(II) complexes total mass loss was observed.

Extraction of rare earth elements {Ln(III), where Ln = Y, Pr. Nd, Sm, Eu} from aqueous perchlorate solutions to chloroform using 5,7-dibromo-8-hydroxyquinoline (Hdbq) has been investigated. It has been found that all investigated Ln(HI) ions were extracted to the organic phase as complexes of the type Ln(dbq),. Extraction parameters have been determined and separation factors for the investigated pairs of Ln(III), as well as Ln(III)/La(III) pairs have been calculated.

Przeprowadzono ekstrakcję pierwiastków ziem rzadkich {Ln(lll), gdzie Ln = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu} z wodnych roztworów chloranów)VII) do roztworów 5.7-dibromo-8-hydroksy-chinoliny (Hdbq) w chloroformie. Wykazano, że wszystkie badane jony Ln(III) ekstrahuja_ się do fazy organicznej w postaci kompleksów typu Ln(dbq)r Wyznaczono parametry procesu ekstrakcji i obliczono współczynniki rozdzielenia dla badanych par jonów Ln(Ill) i par jonów Ln(IIl)/La(III).

Thermal behaviour of all compounds was studied by means of DTA, DTG, TG techniques under static conditions in air. The resultant final products were the metal oxide in all cases. A coupled TG-MS system was used to analysis of princpal volatile thermal decomposition (or fragmentation) products of Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes. The principal volatile mass fragments correspond to: C+, OH+, H2O+, NO+,CO2 + and other.

The extraction of Ln(III) (Pr, Nd, Sm, EU) with 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline in chloroform from water and water-methanol phase was studied. The parameters of the extraction process were determined and the separation factors of investigated pairs of lan-thanides were calculated. In the presence of methanol in the water phase the synergistic effect was observed.

Zbadano ekstrakcję Ln(III) (Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) roztworami 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroksy-chinoliny w chloroformie z fazy wodnej i wodno-metanolowej. Wyznaczono parametry ekstrakcji i obliczono współczynniki separacji poszczególnych par badanych lanta-nowców. W obecności metanolu w fazie wodnej zaobserwowano efekt synergetyczny.

The extractio11 of Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III) and Lu(III) with 5,7-dichloro-8-hydro-xyquinoline (HL) in chloroform from water a11d water-methanol phase was investigated. The formation ofthe species DyL3, LuL3, HoL3.HL, ErL3.HL and LnL3.2MeOH (Ln(III) == Dy, Ho, Er, Lu) In organic phase was stated and the synergistic effect was observed. The parameters of the extraction process were determined and the separation factors of Lu(III) from some rare earth elements were calculated. The separation factors ofLu(III) vs Ln(III) iol1s are considerably greater than those between other rare earths.

Zbadano ekstrakcję Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III) i Lu(III) roztworami 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroksychinoliny (HL) w chloroformie z fazy wodnej i wodno-metanolowej. Stwier-dzono tworzenie się w fazie organicznej połączeń DyL3, LuL3, HoL3.HL, ErL3.HL i LnL3.2MeOH (Ln(III) == Dy, Ho, Er, Lu) oraz zaobserwowano efekt synergetyczny. Wyznaczono parametry procesów ekstrakcji i obliczono współczynniki separacji Ln(III) od niektórych jonów pierwiastków ziem rzadkich. Współczynniki separacji Lu(III) są znacznie wyższe niż w przypadku innych pierwiastków ziem rzadkich.

New complexes 2,4'-bipyridine (2,4'bipy or L) with iron(II) of the formulae FeL2Cl2 2H2O, FeL2Br2 2H2O, FeL2(NCS)2 H2O, FeLSO4 5H2O, FeL4(ClO4)2 2H2O and FeL4(ox) 2H2O (ox=C2O4(- -)) have been prepared and their magnetic, spectroscopic, molar conductivity and thermal properties studied. IR measurements show that the 2,4'-bipy behaves as a monodentate ligand. During heating the hydrated complexes lose all crystalization water and next decompose via different intermediate products to Fe2O3.
