Bełchatow Lignite Mine is the largest producer of lignite in Poland with estimated coal reserves of 700 million tons. The mine excavates two lignite deposits Bełchatow and Szczercow. The Szczercow lignite deposit occupies the western part of the Kleszczow trough, located in the Polish Lowlands. The main part of the lithostratigraphic profile of the Szczercow lignite deposit is a multilayer coal complex, whose thickness varies from 1 to 180 m, with the overburden ratio of 2.84:1. The average thickness of the balance lignite amounts to 40 m. The carbonaceous coefficient of the coal complex in the predominant part of the deposit is over 70%, but locally reaches even up to 100%. Lignite from the Szczercow deposit is of an average technological quality. It typically contains 51.7% of total moisture, 23.6% of ash on dry basis, 3.36% total sulphur recalculated to dry basis, and a net calorific value of 7.33 MJ/kg. Random reflectance (R0) is 0.27% with huminite group macerals averaging at 85%. According to the International Classification of In-Seam Coals and Low Rank Coal Utlization, the technological code of the lignite from the Szczercow deposit is: humic low-rank C (orto-lignite) 19 51 23 33. Similarities between the quality parameters of lignite from the Szczercow and Bełchatow deposits will allow it to be burned in the Bełchatow lignite-fired power plant and may give a chance to extend its activity after the completion of lignite mining from the Bełchatow deposit.

Macroscopic and microscopic composition of lignite from the Szczerców deposit belonging to the Bełchatów Lignite Mine (Polish Lowlands) has been examined. The macroscopic composition was determined according to the newest lithological classification of humic coal. On this basis, it has been shown that the main lithotypes occurring in the Szczerców deposit are the detritic and xylodetritic lignites. The petrographic composition of the investigated lignite was determined microscopically for 11 samples. The examined lignite is predominantly composed of macerals from the huminite group. It is in the range from 75.2 to 86%, including atrinite (23.1–40.7%, averaging 28.9%) and densinite (18.2–41.4 %, averaging 24.9%). It also demonstrated that the statistical variability of the macerals content from the huminite group in the studied lignite is very weak in all samples. In addition, the random reflectance of ulminite was measured traditionally. The results, ranging from 0.247 to 0.282%, with the maximum permissible standard deviation < 0.07, were achieved for all analysed lignite samples.

Mg. Według klasyfikacji International Classification of In-Seam Coal badany węgiel to Humic low-rank C (orto-lignite). Na podstawie Low Rank Coal Utilization – International Codification System badany węgiel według wartości średnich ma zapis kodowy Humic low-rank C (orto-lignite) 08 71 24 10. W klasyfikacji PN-ISO 11760:2007 badany węgiel scharakteryzowano jako lignit/węgiel brunatny C (niski stopień uwęglenia) umiarkowanie wysokowitrynowy, umiarkowanie wysokopopiołowy.

The Dęby Szlacheckie lignite deposit is one of the prospective deposits of Poland. It is located between the Pomeranian Trough and Łódź Basin. The abovementioned deposit is classified to the C1 category of exploration, while its balance resources amount to 103,171 thousand Mg. Productive series is composed of one lignite seam with a thickness ranging from 2.9 to 14.0 metres. It is the 1st Mid-Polish lignite seam of Middle Miocene age. The aim of the present paper is to characterize the basic technological parameters of lignite and classify them according to the current standards. Lignite from the Dęby Szlacheckie deposit is of good technological quality. It is characterized by the average moisture content of 54.0% by weight, average ash content on a dry basis amounting to 24.3% by weight, average sulphur content (dry basis) of 1.04%, and the net calorific value amounting to 7,612 kJ/kg. Both lignite from the Dęby Szlacheckie deposit and the other currently exploited deposits of the KWB Konin lignite have similar quality parameters, which offers the possibility of continued operation of the Konin and Pątnów combined heat and power plants. According to the International Classification of In-Seam Coals, the tested coal can be classified as humic low-rank C (ortho-lignite). On the basis of the Low Rank Coal Utilization – International Codification System, the international code – based on average values – of the examined coal is: humic low-rank C (Ortho-lignite) 08 71 24 10. According to the PN-ISO 11760:2007 Classification of Coals, the tested coal is classified as moderately high-vitrain, moderately high-ash lignite/low rank C.
