The article presents characteristics of the hydrodynamical focusing accompanied by a review of possible applications. The dependence of the focused sheet position on side stream velocities and the dependence of the sheet curvature on its position in the outlet channel are presented and discussed. The results enable one to conclude that the application of hydrodynamical focusing in reaction engineering is highly profitable.
We present an overview of Micro Particle Image Velocimetry (jjPIV); an optical, non-intrusive measurement technique permitting detailed flow-field measurements in microfluidic devices. Both theoretical and practical issues related to uPIV are discussed, such as optical set-up, microscope objective properties, optical filters, seeding particles, particle concentration, flow illumination, system resolution, and data analysis methods. Literature overview of major work done on the subject is provided, along with application examples and potential use. Furthermore, the main limitations of the technique are pointed out.
