First report on intersex in invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus from the Baltic Sea (Gulf of Gdańsk, Poland)

This study is the first to report the presence of intersex in invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus inhabiting the Baltic Sea. The discovery was made in the area of two harbours of the Gulf of Gdańsk (Poland). Macro- and microscopic male gonad analysis revealed the presence of female gametes in testes (testis-ova) of single specimens. In addition, a female-like urogenital papilla was observed in one of the intersex fish. These findings might be due to the exposure to estrogenic endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) however the occurrence of single intersex individuals as a baseline level in investigated population is also possible. In the future, more comprehensive research in the other areas of the Gulf of Gdańsk needs to be carried out in order to determine the extent and to better understand the cause of the observed phenomenon.

Artykuł przedstawia zastosowanie kryterium informacyjnego Akaike do testowania hipotez dotyczących średnich. Zaprezentowana metoda stanowi alternatywę wobec tradycyjnych metod testowania hipotez o średniej, wymagających ustalenia poziomu istotności. W pracy wykorzystano dane eksperymentalne z rozprawy habilitacyjnej W. Piekarskiego [12], dotyczące czasu pracy ciągników C355-360 do pierwszego uszkodzenia. Przedstawione rezultaty stanowią skuteczne narzędzie umożliwiające wybór odpowiedniego modelu statystycznego wśród modeli dotyczących eksploatacji i niezawodności maszyn.

The article presents the application of the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) to test hypothesis concerning mean values. The presented method offers an alternative to traditional hypothesis testing methods requiring the establishment of the significance level. In the article, we used the experimental data from a postdoctoral thesis by W. Piekarski [12] concerning the operation time of C355-360 tractors until the first failure. The obtained results provide a useful tool enabling the choice of a more suitable statistical model from the models relating to the operation and reliability of machines.

In this study, the influence of a combination of different photoperiods and temperatures on the final maturation and social interactions in three-spined sticklebacks was investigated. Water temperature appears to be the principal signal affecting gonadal development and breeding activity of sticklebacks in pre-spawning and spawning periods. Males can mature independently of photoperiod and a stimulatory effect of high temperature is not diminished by light deprivation. On the other hand, low temperature can inhibit the development of secondary sexual characters in males exposed to long day or constant light. In females, lighting seems to be more decisive for complete maturation and the lack of light delays the maturation rate, even in high temperature. While kept under the same conditions, males mature quicker than females. The presence of light and visual information are crucial to establish the social position of individuals in the group. In light, a rigid social hierarchy with one dominant, sexually active male is observed. In constant darkness, however, several males in the group demonstrate every sign of sexual activity.

Annual reproductive cycle in two free living populations of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.): patterns of ovarian and testicular development

The annual reproductive cycle in two wild populations of three-spined stickleback was studied. Sticklebacks from the Dead Vistula River (Martwa Wisła) (brackish water) and the Oliva Stream (Potok Oliwski) (freshwater) were exposed to annual environmental changes in their natural habitats. Ovaries and livers (females), and testes and kidneys (males) were collected during 1-2 years. The gonadosomatic IG, hepatosomatic IH, nephrosomatic IN indices, kidney epithelium height (KEH) and size of oocytes were calculated.The number of mature oocytes and percentage of ovulating females were determined during the spawning season. Histological changes in the ovaries and testes were described throughout a year. Annual reproductive cycles were similar in both populations of sticklebacks. This is the first histological and morphological study carried out throughout a year, simultaneously in two wild populations of three-spined sticklebacks inhabiting different environments. An improved scale of gonadal development in conjunction with the determined indices and fecundity give a comprehensive description of the reproductive cycle. These new observations, in combination with previously reported features, provide a universal scale that can be successfully used to distinguish all phases of gametogenesis in sticklebacks in different habitats.

W pracy przedstawiono główne problemy związane z eksploatacją KUO w Bydgoszczy. Wykazano, że założenia projektowe nie przewidziały wielu elementów, takich jak istotne zmiany morfologii odpadów czy wejście na rynek wielu dostawców.

The main problems concerning exploitation of Waste Utilization Complex in Bydgoszcz have been presented. It was shown that many elements such as the essential changes of waste morphology or entering the market by many suppliers were not anticipated in brief fore design. Thus, change of morphology consists not only in the change of portion of the individual fractions but also in different method of filling the sorters on the individual sorting stations than that assumed in technological design. It was found that in 1990, the amounts of the supplied wastes increased as follows: waste paper by 37%, cullet by 472%, textiles by 323% and metals by 225%, respectively. Moreover, many suppliers imply the problems such as: accumulation of deliveries at the same time or variety of sorting systems which are not always in accordance with that accepted in exploitation design.

W niniejszej pracy omówiono gospodarkę odpadami komunalnymi w Bydgoszczy. Scharakteryzowano Kompleks Utylizacji Odpadów dla miasta Bydgoszczy. Szczegółowo omówiono stacje segregacji odpadów, składowisko odpadów biodegradowalnych, składowisko odpadów balastowych, stację przetwarzania gazu wysypiskowego, a także składowisko odpadów niebezpiecznych. Przedstawiono skład morfologiczny odpadów komunalnych składowanych na wysypisku. Ponadto omówiono problemy eksploatacyjne związane ze zmiennym składem przywożonych odpadów. Istotne problemy występują podczas segregacji odpadów, które zawierają surowce wtórne oraz z zagospodarowaniem znacznych ilości powstających odcieków. Omówiono także problemy związane z obecnością owadów, gryzoni i ptactwa, które należą do stałego krajobrazu wysypiska.

The municipal waste management in Bydgoszcz was discussed in the paper. Waste Utilization Complex for Bydgoszcz city was characterized. Stations of waste segregation, biodegradable waste dump, ballast waste dump, station of landfill gas disposal and dangerous waste dump were described in details. The morphological composition of the municipal wastes in dumping ground was presented. Moreover, the operating problems resulting from the various compositions of the supplied wastes were discussed. Segregation of wastes containing secondary materials and disposal of the considerable amounts of leachates cause the significant problems. Furthermore, problems caused by the presence of insects, rodents and birds being a permanent element of dumping grounds were described.

The cycle of gonad development and related changes in the length structure and spatial-temporal distribution of ninespine sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius L.) in Puck Bay were studied. Observations were carried out in the shallow shore zones, as well as in the deeper epipelagic zone of the Bay. Ninespine sticklebacks reproduce in the brackish environment of Puck Bay, breeding in its warmer, inshore zones. Reproduction takes place in the spring and summer months, from April to July. One female spawns several clutches of eggs during one breeding season. The average length of ninespine sticklebacks in Puck Bay was about 40 mm, and the sex ratio in the population was close to 1:1. However, both length structure and sex ratio were subject to local and periodic variations, resulting from possible breeding-related territorial divisions. Higher gonadosomatic indices in females in early spring represented the transition of fish to the advanced vitelligenous phase. The lowest GSI of males during the breeding season indicated the termination of spermatogenesis. The completion of spawning in August started a new process of gonad restoration to prepare the fish for the next breeding season.

Jeden z autorów artykułu sygnalizował w numerze czerwcowym PK z 1995 roku, rozpoczęcie produkcji prądu elektrycznego z gazu wysypiskowego na bydgoskim wysypisku odpadów komunalnych. Obecnie, będąc współautorem niniejszego artykułu prezentuje doświadczenia z czteroletniej eksploatacji tej elektrowni.
