Quebracho tannin - hyperbranched polyglycerolblends as adhesives for wood bonding.Applicability of tannin-hyperbranched polyglycerol blends cured with hexamine in wood bonding was investigated. Adhesive performance of the systems was examined. It was shown that strengths of adhesive joints exceeded that of the substrate, therefore it was concluded that hyperbranched polyglycerols might be effective components of tannic adhesives.

EN
High density solid biofuel from oil palm biomass. Large quantities of oil palm biomass available can significantly become the important source for renewable energy in Malaysia in the form of pellet or briquette. Nonetheless, lignocellulosic biomass should be treated to increase their energy efficiency prior to the combustion. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of torrefaction treatment on the weight loss and energy properties of oil palm biomass (oil palm trunk and empty fruit bunch). The lignocellulosic biomass was torrefied at three different temperatures (200 to 300 °C) within 15 to 45 min. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimization of torrefaction conditions, to determine the maximum energy properties and minimum weight loss. Results showed that heating values of biomass was affected by treatment severity (cumulated effect of temperature and time). While the reaction temperature had a strong impact on the energy density of torrefied biomass, the effect of treatment time was considerably lesser under the torrefaction conditions used in this study. It was demonstrated that each biomass type had its own unique set of operating conditions to achieve the same product quality. The optimized torrefaction conditions were verified empirically and applicability of the model was confirmed. The results of this study could be used as a guide for the production of high density solid biofuel from oil palm biomass. Conclusively, high density solid biofuel from oil palm biomass can be produced using torrection method.

Content available remote Feasibility of bioethanol conversion from lignocellulosic biomass in Malaysia
EN
Feasibility of bioethanol conversion from lignocellulosic biomass in Malaysia.Ethanol is a high-octane fuel which is used primarily as a gasoline additive and extender in US and biofuel for flex-fuel light vehicles in Brazil. The most common usage of bioethanol is to power automobiles through mixed with petrol. Ethanol fuel blends are widely sold in the United States, Brazil, Europe and China. The most common blend is 10% ethanol and 90% petrol (E10). Vehicle engines require no modifications to run on E10 and vehicle warranties are unaffected also. Only flexible fuel vehicles can run on up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol blends (E85). Commercial production of bioethanol deals with the biotechnological production from different feedstock. The selection of the most appropriate feedstock for ethanol production strongly depends on the local conditions. Due to the agro-ecological conditions, North American and European countries have based their ethanol industry on the starchy materials. In Brazil, sugarcane is the main feedstock for bioethanol production. World production of ethanol (all grades) in 2007 was about 12 billion gallons. Although many countries produce ethanol from a variety of feedstocks, Brazil and the United States are the major producers of ethanol in the world, each accounting for approximately 35 percent of global production. The studied lignocellulosic biomass has a higher bioethanol yield per tonne feedstock (L/t) than most of the commercialized bioethanol feedstock. However, improvement had to be made on the conversion efficiency to obtained higher ethanol yield to make it more comparable with the sugar containing and starchy material. The composition of substance that can be converted to glucose played a big influence on the ethanol yield per tonne feedstock.
