Representation of architectural idea and interpretation as part of the protection of cultural heritage

Architecture and urban planning, classified as technical disciplines of science, in their records of creative works, also maintain representations of architectural ideas in the form of drawings, sketches or paintings. Ancillary to national heritage collections, they are an extensive source of information, which links the autonomous vision of the creator with the form outline, thus, creating an external context of such a form. Original architectural notations are part of the documentation of designs that were later executed and those that failed to be executed at all; furthermore, they confirm the high quality of expertise and the individual approach typical of leading professionals in the field across the world. The inspiration drawn from the 20th and 21st century facilities, translated into the language of artistic expression, proves the interdisciplinarity of the architectural profession and its communicative and educational assets shall be subject to particular protection and shall be displayed in order to elevate the rank of their meaning in the design process as well as in the collection of national, cultural heritage.

Architektura i urbanistyka, zaliczana do dziedziny nauk technicznych, w swoim rejestrze kreacji twórczych zawiera także zapis idei architektonicznych przedstawianych w postaci rysunków, szkiców, malarstwa. Jako dopełnienie zbiorów dziedzictwa kultury i sztuki stanowią one bogate źródło informacji, scalające autonomiczną myśl twórcy z zarysem formy, budującej kontekst zewnętrzny. Autorskie notacje architektoniczne są częścią dokumentacji zrealizowanych i niezrealizowanych projektów, także potwierdzeniem wysokiej jakości warsztatu zawodowego oraz indywidualnych postaw reprezentujących czołówkę światowego środowiska twórczego. Inspiracje czerpane z obiektów XX i XXI wieku, przekładane na język wypowiedzi plastycznej, dowodzą interdyscyplinarności specyfiki zawodu architekta, a ich komunikatywne oraz edukacyjne wartości powinny być w szczególny sposób chronione i eksponowane, podnosząc tym samym rangę znaczenia zarówno w procesie projektowym, jak i w zbiorach narodowego dziedzictwa kultury.

The interdisciplinarity of space creation opens up the opportunities for multifaceted research into sources, objectives and methods of expression. The reciprocal nature of relationships between illustrated visions and forms that capture imagination is an introduction to the subsequent design decisions. It is an excuse for transferring technical graphs into painting or drawing planes, which are closely linked to the quality of the design composition. Pure, abstracted artistic message inspires and encourages a different look at architecture while pointing to the unlimited possibilities for promoting architectural ideas. It also emphasises the importance of the impact the image has on viewer's imagination, as well as stimulates and provokes further dialogue. "Architecture becomes an image – the image is read as architecture".

Interdyscyplinarność kreacji przestrzeni otwiera możliwości wielopłaszczyznowego poszukiwania źródeł, celu i metod ekspresji. Zwrotny charakter relacji pomiędzy zobrazowanymi wizjami i anektującymi wyobraźnię formami stanowi wstęp do implementacji kolejnych decyzji projektowych. Jest pretekstem do transferu technicznych grafów na malarskie czy rysunkowe płaszczyzny, powiązane ściśle z jakością kompozycji projektowej. Czysty, wyabstrahowany przekaz plastyczny inspiruje oraz zachęca do innego spojrzenia na architekturę, zwraca uwagę na nieograniczone możliwości upowszechniania idei architektonicznych, podkreśla wagę oddziaływania obrazem na wyobraźnię odbiorcy, uaktywnia i prowokuje do dalszego dialogu. The technical representation of architectural drawings, as the value of a spatial composition, based on the harmony of form and function, may be applied to the ground of painting. The prescriptive character of architectural notation is an excellent pretext for the creative and exploratory activation of multicultural environments, at the same time being used to transfer architectural ideas.

In the work of the architect, drawing representation is an essential means of communication as well as an important factor verifying the level of sophistication of the design process. It portrays the original vision aimed at viewers – an industry specialist, an investor and the creator themselves. It enables to confront the drawn idea with the design purpose. Idea ‒ drawing ↔ mirror – execution. Rich in artistic values and technical content, it transfigures an individual view of the art of shaping space, demonstrating the multidimensional perception of architecture and the interdisciplinary character of the profession.

Zapis rysunkowy w twórczości architekta stanowi podstawowy środek komunikacji oraz istotny czynnik weryfikujący poziom zaawansowania procesu projektowego. Jest utożsamieniem autorskiej wizji adresowanej do odbiorcy zewnętrznego – branżysty, inwestora oraz samego twórcy. Daje możliwość konfrontacji zobrazowanej idei z celowością projektową. Wyobrażenie ‒ rysunek ↔ lustro – realizacja. Współczesne wzornictwo przemysłowe to kombinacja geometrii, logiki informatycznej, matematycznej i algorytmicznej, nieograniczonych możliwości wyrażania ekspresji form kształtowanych w przestrzeniach cyfrowych w oparciu o nieujarzmione wizje projektantów. Poruszanie się w dwóch światach, realnym i wirtualnym, odbywa się dzięki możliwościom jakie dają cyfrowe narzędzia projektowania i wytwarzania. Zastygłe w ruchu kształty, płynne, miękkie linie swobodnych form wydobywających się z głębokich pokładów wyobraźni, to cechy obecne dziś nie tylko w architekturze ale i designie. Wystawa w Philadelphia Museum of Art pt. Zaha Hadid Form in Motion (2012) uświadamia, w spektakularny sposób, zmiany jakie zaszły we wzornictwie pod wpływem technologii cyfrowych. Ujawnia także tak istotną dziś potrzebę nowych materiałów, odpowiednich dla krzywoliniowych form o złożonej geometrii. Polemika architektury oraz wzornictwa z ofertą współczesnych możliwości projektowych i wytwórczych stawia nowe wyzwania dla projektantów i wytwórców. Z nową uwagą spogląda się dziś na drewno, metal i szkło czy zwykłe plastiki. Wzrasta zainteresowanie materiałami o strukturze złożonej z dwóch lub więcej komponentów. Włókno szklane ze względu na swoje właściwości wytrzymałościowe wchodzi w skład znanych i sprawdzonych materiałów nadając im nowe własności wytrzymałościowe i poprawiając ich performance. Cyfrowy proces projektowy sygnalizuje potrzebę inteligentnych reaktywnych materiałów, wytrzymałych i podlegające recyklingowi. Oczekują na nie, nie tylko Zaha Hadid, ale także inni twórcy jak Ammara Eloueini, Evan Douglis Studio, Grega Lynn i wielu innych zainteresowanych wykorzystywaniem możliwości cyfrowych narzędzi projektowania we wzornictwie przemysłowym i architekturze.

Contemporary industrial design is a combination of geometry, IT, mathematical and algorithmic logic and unlimited possibilities of forms expressions shaped in digital realities and based on unharnessed visions of designers. Digital tools and Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing technologies (CAD/CAM technologies) enable getting around two worlds: real and virtual. Shapes in standstill, smooth and soft lines of free forms getting out of leading creators' deep imagination are accessible through the dynamic form-finding of architecture and design shaping. Zaha Hadid Form in Motion (2012) exhibition at Philadelphia Museum of Art highlights in a spectacular way all the changes which have taken place in design under the influence of digital technologies. It also underlines something very crucial in our times, namely the need for new materials, appropriate for curvilinear forms of complex geometry. Architecture and design polemics with contemporary offer of design and productive possibilities, sets new challenges to designers and manufacturers. Nowadays wood, metal, glass or even simple plastic are perceived in a new light. An interest in materials made of two or more components is on the increase. Fibreglass thanks to its durability is a widely used material, giving objects new long-lasting qualities and improving their performance. Digital project process stresses the need for intelligent reactive materials, strong and recyclable. Zaha Hadid, Ammara Eloueini, Evan Douglis Studio, Grega Lynn and many others who are interested in using digital tools in industrial design and architecture are really looking forward to them.

Detal stanowi swoistą wizytówkę danego obiektu. Dla poczucia tożsamości z miastem, miejscem, obiektem należy stosować różne jego formy, pamiętając o zjawisku nadmiaru i upowszechnienia, a przede wszystkim o bardzo istotnej roli detalu - elementu wyróżniającego. Podkreślanie detalem funkcji obiektów nadaje im dodatkowe walory oraz uczytelnia komunikat w odbiorze wizualnym. Będzie też znakiem rozpoznawczym, tak potrzebnym w dzisiejszym natłoku zjawisk ważnych i nieważnych, mieszających się ze sobą w zastraszającym tempie życia.

The whole process of perception and its identification phase in particular is connected with distinguishing and favoring a group of signals that reflect the, so called, "object features". In the architectural context a detail is such a signal. Details can be considered as a visit card of an object, its distinctive elements and identification from the context. In order to evoke the feeling of identity with a place, a city or an object various forms of details have to be applied. It is important not to underestimate the phenomena of excess and dissemination, and foremost the essential role of the detail - distinctive element. Emphasizing the function of objects by details imparts additional values to the objects and clarifies their visual perception. Additionally it enables their identification, which seems essential in the mass of relevant and irrelevant information overlapping in the terrifying pace of life.

Preserving the identity of a city in face of the danger posed by globalization requires defining its character. Such semantic classification of different urban agglomerations enables one to create a portrait of the city. The quality of this portrait is of significant importance in terms of determining the direction of the urban development. Both respecting the cultural heritage and awareness of its historical and cultural value classify the residents and the visitors of the city at high existential level. At the same time they evoke the feeling of mental safety and stability that is inseparably linked to identity.

Jednym z elementów kształtujących panoramę miasta jest wieża, odbierana jako dominanta, pion, akcent wysokościowy. Wieża ma wpływ na atrakcyjność miasta, organizuje przestrzeń w zasięgu odbioru wizualnego, jest także elementem wartościującym kontekst. Wyszczególnienie akcentów wysokościowych, przedstawienie metod obserwacji w powiązaniu z zapisami graficznymi analiz panoramicznych i położenia, wyznaczenie w mieście i na jego obrzeżach ważnych punktów, miejsc i stref dobrego postrzegania poszczególnych obiektów czy zespołów hierarchicznie najważniejszych wież poznańskich, a także ustalenie ogólnych założeń dotyczących próby określenia zasad zagospodarowania z uwzględnieniem relacji przestrzennych, oraz ich wstępnego zdefiniowania w postaci ustaleń miejscowych - może zahamować proces dewastacji historycznego charakteru śródmieścia, a w konsekwencji - całej sylwety miasta.

A very important aspect of the urban development arę good view zones and points; during the design work, studies and analyses conducted in the first stage of spatial devel-opment, the town planning authorities should not approve or even evaluate any projects for which such analyses or studies have not been performed. Depreciation of value of panoramas which arę still considered characteristic for the city should be prevented. The city of Poznań has deep historical roots which arę nów evi-dent in the restored and rebuilt old sacral and secular buildings. It seems worthwhile to maintain the overall architectural climate of the city which should not aim in the direction of a „tali" skyline. Too much has already been said to start loud protests nów, but the examples of wrong architectural and urban decisions in the capi-lal of the region of Wielkopolska arę easily identifiable.
