The need of supervision and control over transport of slaughter animals as the part of growing awareness of animal rights and sustainable development

Purpose: The article presents issues related to the transport of slaughter animals in terms of sustainable development and during the time of increased interest in animal rights. The aim of the article is to analyze the functioning of transport companies involved in the transport of animals. The first part of the article presents issues related to animal welfare, which is part of the concept of sustainable development. Particular attention was paid to the issue of welfare during the transport of farm animals to the slaughterhouse. Methodology: The article presents the results of the Supreme Audit Office on the transport of animals, which were carried out in 1998, 2003, 2005 and 2017, and the results of inspections belonging to the tasks of the Veterinary Inspection in the Silesian Voivodeship in 2019 and 2020.Then the author presents her research results. The survey was conducted among the owners of enterprises handling the transport of slaughter animals in the Silesian Voivodeship and among drivers and guards of these enterprises. 94 business owners and 92 drivers transporting animals participated in the study. Chi-square tests were used to show the relationship between the variables Findings: On the basis of the conducted research, it was found that the control system is conducive to the enforcement of the law in the field of transport of animals for slaughter in enterprises. Originality/value: In the context of sustainable development, the subject of animal welfare is being increasingly regarded as essential. Ensuring animal welfare is now the key issue for public opinion, livestock farmers, animal rights organizations, entrepreneurs, transport companies and slaughterhouses. The awareness of people related to publicizing animal abuse is increasing, and we as consumers also have a right to know how animals were treated on farms and during transport.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie problemów związanych z transportem zwierząt rzeźnych oraz zwrócenie uwagi na specyficzny rodzaj ,,ładunku” jakim jest żywy organizm. Zaprezentowano również koncepcje równoważonego rozwoju w kontekście transportu zwierząt rzeźnych, która ma ogromne znaczenie nie tylko dla przyszłych pokoleń ale również dla funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstw zajmujących się przewozem zwierząt.

This article presents the problems associated with the transport of animals for slaughter and it draws attention to a specific type of "load" which is a living organism. The author presents the concepts of sustainable development in the context of the transport of animals for slaughter. According to the author this is very important issue in terms of future generations and also in terms of transport companies.

Celem pracy była analiza rozmiarów oraz określenie struktury geograficznej handlu zagranicznego Polski żywymi zwierzętami w latach 2004 -2011. Handel zagraniczny Polski żywymi zwierzętami głównie odbywa się z państwami Unii Europejskiej. Jednak większy udział państw Unii Europejskiej jest w przypadku importu żywych zwierząt niż eksportu. W przypadku eksportu żywych zwierząt ważne miejsce oprócz krajów Unii Europejskiej mają kraje Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej zwłaszcza Rosja i Ukraina. W handlu zagranicznym Polski występuje wysoki udział zwierząt rzeźnych, z wyjątkiem importu bydła, gdzie dominują zwierzęta hodowlane. Należy dążyć w handlu zagranicznym do ograniczania lub całkowitej rezygnacji z handlu zwierzętami rzeźnymi, dążąc do doskonalenia warunków transportu dla zwierząt hodowlanych.

The aim of this work is analyses of the value and geographical structure of foreign trade of live animals in years 2004-2011. Export and import of live animals takes place within European Union. There is high share of animals for slaughter in Polish foreign trade, with the exception of cattle, which is dominated by livestock. In foreign trade efforts should be made to reduce or completely abandon the trade of animals slaughter, seeking to improve conditions for livestock transport.

Przedstawiono wymagania Unii Europejskiej dotyczące transportu zwierząt żywych. Zastosowanie tych wymagań zobrazowano na przykładzie skupu żywca przez zakłady mięsne „Dolina Łąk” w Małaszewiczach. Przedstawiono przykład optymalizacji organizacji transportu surowca do tych zakładów.

The software for designing the working parts of a cutter written in Delphi 7 language was presented in paper. A fragment of practical utilization of the software during analysis and preliminary designing the working parts of the device was described. The software may be used at didactic process.
