Due to the presence of harmful substances in resins those mould sands may be hazardous to the natural environment and workers. The general assessment of harmfulness of sands used for molds and cores encompasses 2 basic points: emission of hazardous substances during processes of preparing sands, pouring mold with liquid metals (high temperatures), cooling and shaking-out; possibility of washing out hazardous substances from used sands to the environment, during storage or economic use outside foundries. We present the results of research on the emission of BTEX compounds from mould sands with phenolic resins during pouring liquid metal of different temperature (cast iron and Al alloy). The research was conducted according to the original method prepared by the authors, which has been used for years in cooperation with various foundries (Poland, abroad).

Dotychczas przygotowanie próbek w celu określenia zanieczyszczenia wód metodami chromatograficznymi wiązało się z czasochłonnym procesem wyodrębnienia analitów z matrycy próbki. Obecnie, dzięki metodzie Purge and Trap ten element się pomija, a próbka wody jest wstrzykiwana bezpośrednio do przystawki Purge and Trap. Przedstawiona metoda oznaczania związków typu BTEX (benzenu, toluenu, etylobenzenu, paraksylenu, metaksylenu oraz ortoksylenu) jest skuteczna i szybka w realizacji. Względne odchylenia standardowe podczas sprawdzania powtarzalności metody były zadowalające na poziomie dziesiątych i setnych części vppm zawartości badanych związków w roztworze. Na poziomie ppb oznaczenia nie powinny już być wykonywane, ze względu na obarczenie metody dużym błędem. Przebadanie próbek wody zanieczyszczonych benzyną pokazało praktyczną przydatność tej metody do oznaczania zanieczyszczeń typu BTEX.

Preparation of samples for determination of water pollutants by chromatographic methods was associated with a time-consuming process of separation analytes from sample.s matrix. Because of the Purge and Trap technique this element can be omitted and sample of water is injected directly into the Purge and Trap device. The presented method of determination BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, paraxylene, metaxylene and orthoxylene) is efficient and very quick. The relative standard deviations (during examining repeatability of the method) were satisfactory at the level from a few vppm content of the compounds in solution. At the ppb level, the analysis should no longer be performed due to method.s uncertainty. Examination of gasoline contaminated water samples has demonstrated practical usefulness of this method for determining BTEX compounds.
