The article discusses the issue of Europol’s position in the security architecture. Generally, Europol’s competence covers combating organized crime, terrorism and selected forms of serious crime. The competency – with certain restrictions – is defined by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and it is an essential criterion for its location in the security system. From operational point of view Europol’s activities are based primarily on criminal intelligence processes.
