Factors influencing the intended adoption of digital transformation: a South African case study

Organisations worldwide are facing a market pressures which are forcing them to undertake digital transformation projects or initiatives. This research study set out to explore this in more depth, asking questions about the intention of South African (SA) retail organisations to adopt digital transformation and probing into the understanding and perception of digital transformation itself, as well as future intended use cases for available digital technologies. A case study approach was deemed to be an appropriate strategy given the paucity of existing academic research on the topic. Participants in the study had a good understanding of digital transformation and digital technologies, but perceptions were mixed. The most prominent digital transformation initiatives in the SA retail industry were the adoption of cloud technologies and data analytics. The factors identified in this study, using the Technology, Organisational, and Environmental (TOE) framework, can assist retailers in their decision-making process concerning digital transformation adoption.

Artykuł dotyczy zmian, jakie zaszły w przedsięwzięciach o charakterze rewitalizacji na przestrzeni około pięćdziesięciu lat. Rewitalizacja zabudowy ekstensywnej stwarzała zazwyczaj najmniej problemów, bo właściciele łatwiej mogli dostrzec własne korzyści. W uboższych i gęsto zaludnionych częściach miast było to przedsięwzięcie trudne i tam najczęściej dochodziło do gentryfikacji w najostrzejszej formie. Po niej następowała zupełna wymiana mieszkańców, a dzielnica zmieniała się radykalnie. Początkowe techniczne podejście do procesu, rozumiane jako wyburzenie starej i budowę nowej substancji, zarzucono pod wpływem złych doświadczeń. W proces włączono stopniowo doświadczenia nauk społecznych. W koncepcji partycypacji społecznej, zwłaszcza w przypadku dzielnic intensywnie zabudowanych, kładzie się nacisk zarówno na przygotowanie mieszkańców do poniesienia określonych niewygód, jak i ukazanie, w przystępny dla nich sposób, przyszłych korzyści wynikających z rewitalizacji.

The paper deals with changes that have ocurred in performing revitalization enterprises in the last fifty years. Revitalization of extensively built districts proved to be easier, as the benefits were quickly noticed by the owners. In poorer and densely inhabited areas, it was a difficult enterprise and gentrification in its most extreme form often took place there. It was resulted in change of inhabitants, entailing change of the character of the district. Initial technical attitude towards the problem, perceived as demolition and construction of the new structures evolved, due to negative experience. Gradual incorporation of social science achievements was gradually incorporated into the process. The idea of participation of the community particularly in densely populated areas, includes prepossessing inhabitants for particular discomforts and showing them, in clear form, the benefits of the revitalization.
