Metamorphosis of modernist large-panel housing estates towards a sustainable public spaces system of the city

Large-panel housing estates seem to be of particular importance in the debate on the evolution of the modernist heritage. The technocratic approach has left a deep mark on this kind of settlements. With time their environmental conditions degrade, and consequently they require regular corrective actions undertaken in thorough revitalisation processes. However, in many original design concepts of such housing estates, some core elements of sustainable development can be noticed. These elements recognised as a potential could play an important role in the contemporary process of metamorphosis of housing estates. This paper explores a comprehensive approach to improving the quality of housing environment by focusing on the systematisation of spatial aspects of revitalisation in order to achieve optimal use of public spaces within large-panel housing settings. An in-depth analysis of successful revitalisations of large-panel housing estates in Germany provided a foundation for proposing a methodology of a systematic socio-spatial approach to public spaces. Its possible applicability is particularly important in Polish housing estates and their metamorphosis towards developing the continuity of public space in the city, which is currently under threat.

This paper presents contemporary ideas of shaping residential buildings in relation to nature, mostly the climate and the sunlight. On the basis of authorial studies, it describes some objects recently realized in Austria. In this country, actions for the sake of sustainable architecture and urbanism are taken in various scales – from the implementation of entire districts and extensive housing estates to small residential complexes and single buildings. They are characterized by the promotion of economical and compact urban structures which combine their inhabitants’ comfort with the comfort of nature.

W artykule przedstawiono współczesne idee kształtowania zabudowy mieszkaniowej w powiązaniu z przyrodą, a przede wszystkim klimatem i słońcem. W oparciu o studia autorskie zaprezentowano najnowsze realizacje austriackie. Działania na rzecz zrównoważonej architektury i urbanistyki podejmowane są w tym kraju w różnej skali, od realizacji całych dzielnic, większych osiedli, po niewielkie zespoły mieszkaniowe i pojedyncze budynki. Charakteryzuje je dążenie do uzyskania struktur urbanistycznych oszczędnych i zwartych łączących komfort mieszkańców z komfortem przyrody.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki związanej ze zrównoważonym projektowaniem architektoniczno-urbanistycznym zespołów mieszkaniowych przyszłości – osiedla jutra. Autor stawia tezę, że w warunkach polskich będzie to stopniowe wprowadzanie, a w przyszłości na szeroką skalę zrównoważonych form zabudowy mieszkaniowej w strukturę urbanistyczną miast różnej wielkości, a także wsi ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na aspekt społeczny, czyli m.in. zapewnienie dostępności do własnego mieszkania lub domu. Osiedle jutra będzie zatem zrównoważonym zespołem mieszkaniowym jutra. Taki temat otrzymali studenci Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej w Katedrze Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego, zakładając że ich oryginalne pomysły i kreatywność plastyczna oraz ideowa przyniosą ciekawe propozycje i przestrzenne rozwiązania. Artykuł prezentuje 15 studenckich projektów architektoniczno-urbanistycznych zrównoważonych zespołów mieszkaniowych jutra, w których zawarte są różnorodne i interesujące przestrzenne wizje oraz humanistyczne i społeczne idee kształtowania zrównoważonego środowiska mieszkaniowego niedalekiej przyszłości. Pokazują zdaniem autora właściwą drogę eksperymentów i poszukiwań odpowiednich rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych zmierzających do poprawy jakości środowiska mieszkaniowego w Polsce.

This article concerns problems related to the sustainable architectural and urban design of future residential complexes – tomorrow’s estate. The author poses a thesis that, under Polish conditions, it will be the gradual introduction of sustainable housing forms into the urban structure of variously sized towns and cities as well as villages with special attention to the social aspect, i.e. guaranteed access to one’s own flat or house; they will be applied on a broad scale in the future. Thus, tomorrow’s estate will be tomorrow’s sustainable residential complex. Such a theme was assigned to the students of the Chair of Housing Environment, Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology. We assumed that their original ideas as well as artistic and ideological creativity would bring some interesting propositions and spatial solutions. This article presents fifteen students’ architectural and urban designs of tomorrow’s sustainable residential complexes which include diverse, curious spatial visions as well as humanistic and social ideas of shaping a sustainable housing environment for the immediate future. In the author’s opinion, they lay out the right course of experiments and searches for proper functional and spatial solutions which aim at improving the quality of the housing environment in Poland.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki związanej ze zrównoważonym projektowaniem architektoniczno-urbanistycznym „domu jutra”. W drugiej dekadzie dwudziestego pierwszego wieku w dobie globalnego kryzysu ekonomiczno-finansowego, gwałtownego wzrostu demograficznego ludności świata, znacznej urbanizacji globu i zagrożeń klimatycznych istotne staje się pytanie o dom jutra oraz jak mieszkać. Taki temat otrzymali studenci Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej w Katedrze Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego. Zakładając, że ich świeże pomysły przyniosą interesujące propozycje i przestrzenne rozwiązania autor chciał w ten sposób pobudzić wyobraźnię i kreatywność studentów przykładając równocześnie dużą wagę do strony ideowej koncepcji projektowych. Artykuł prezentuje 32 studenckie projekty architektoniczno-urbanistyczne domów jutra, które zawierają oryginalne idee kształtowania zrównoważonego środowiska mieszkaniowego. Pokazują zdaniem autora właściwą drogę eksperymentów i poszukiwań odpowiednich rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych zmierzających do poprawy jakości środowiska mieszkaniowego w Polsce, Europie i na świecie.

This article concerns problems related to the sustainable architectural and urban design of “tomorrow’s house”. In the second decade of the twenty-first century – in the era of a global economic and financial crisis, a worldwide population explosion, the intense urbanization of the globe as well as a number of climatic threats, the question of tomorrow’s house and the living conditions becomes extremely important. Such a theme was assigned to the students of the Chair of Housing Environment, Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology. Assuming that the students’ fresh ideas will bring some interesting propositions and spatial solutions, the author wished to stimulate their imagination and creativity attaching importance to the ideological side of their designing concepts. This article presents thirty-two students’ architectural and urban designs of tomorrow’s houses which include original ideas of shaping a sustainable housing environment. In the author’s opinion, they show the right way to experiments and searches for proper functional and spatial solutions which aim at improving the quality of the housing environment in Poland, in Europe and across the world.

This paper concerns the problems of social spaces in man’s place of residence within residential complexes in the city. The degree of creativity and the quality of shaping social spaces determine the climate, intimacy and individuality of a residential complex, the diversity of urban places in man’s sustainable housing environment, his attitude towards the surroundings, landscape and nature as well as the scale and location of an urban layout. The quality of social spaces is bound with the development of civilization and the society’s awareness of the need for the development and existence of these spaces. This paper presents four examples of selected new residential complexes in Berlin and one example from Hamburg. They were analyzed which made it possible to define some aspects concerning the formation of new social spaces meant for the local community in a given place of residence as well as housing architecture with its vicinity inseparable from these spaces.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki przestrzeni społecznych w miejscu zamieszkania człowieka w zespołach mieszkaniowych w mieście. Stopień kreatywności oraz jakość kształtowania przestrzeni społecznych stanowi o klimacie, kameralności i indywidualności zespołu mieszkaniowego, o różnorodności miejsc w mieście w zrównoważonym środowisku mieszkaniowym człowieka, stosunku do otoczenia, krajobrazu, natury, a także o skali i lokalizacji założenia urbanistycznego. Jakość przestrzeni społecznych jest ściśle związana z rozwojem cywilizacyjnym społeczeństwa oraz jego świadomością potrzeby rozwoju i istnienia tych przestrzeni. W niniejszym artykule zaprezentowano cztery przykłady wybranych nowych berlińskich zespołów mieszkaniowych oraz jeden przykład z Hamburga. Poddano je analizie, na podstawie której zostały określone niektóre aspekty dotyczące kształtowania nowych przestrzeni społecznych przeznaczonych dla ludności lokalnej w ich miejscu zamieszkania i nierozerwalnie związanej z tymi przestrzeniami architektury mieszkaniowej wraz z najbliższym otoczeniem.

This article concerns problems related to the shaping of green social spaces in residential complexes which make recreational areas commonly used by the inhabitants in their places of residence. The author uses an example of the individual formation of these spaces resulting from the locational conditions, the existing urban context as well as functional and spatial creation - the design of a residential complex related to his own architectural and urban activity. He presents a green social space in a residential complex implemented in Abp. Jerzego Ablewicza and Marii Dąbrowskiej Streets in Tarnow in the years 2003-2011.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki związanej z projektowaniem architektoniczno-urbanistycznym przestrzeni społecznych w zespołach mieszkaniowych, szczególnie w niskiej intensywnej zabudowie mieszkaniowej na przykładzie projektów studenckich wykonanych w Katedrze Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej w semestrze III roku akademickiego 2011/2012. Projektowanie dotyczyło zespołów mieszkaniowych zlokalizowanych w południowej części aglomeracji miasta Krakowa: Opatkowice Południe oraz Sidzina Południe. Rozwiązania funkcjonalno-przestrzenne zespołów mieszkaniowych w szczególny sposób wyeksponowały przyjazne człowiekowi pod względem skali, proporcji i zagospodarowania terenu przestrzenie społeczne jako miejsca dla kontaktów międzyludzkich i kontaktu z naturą. Artykuł przedstawia merytoryczną charakterystykę prezentowanych projektów, osiągnięte wyniki dydaktyczne Katedry Kształtowania Środowiska Mieszkaniowego oraz tendencje w nauczaniu zrównoważonego projektowania architektoniczno-urbanistycznego zespołów mieszkaniowych w zakresie dotyczącym kształtowania przestrzeni społecznych w miejscu zamieszkania.

This article concerns problems related to the architectural and urban design of social spaces in housing complexes, especially in low intensive residential buildings, exemplified by designs prepared by the students of the Chair of Housing Environment at the Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology in Semester 3 in the academic year 2011/2012. The designing activities concerned residential complexes located in the southern part of the agglomeration of the City of Krakow: Opatkowice Południe and Sidzina Południe. In a particular manner, the functional and spatial solutions of these complexes exposed some man-friendly social spaces as places for contacting other people and communing with Nature considering their scale, proportions and land management. This article presents a profile of the students' designs pertaining to the subject matter, the educational results of the Chair of Housing Environment as well as the tendencies in teaching the sustainable architectural and urban design of residential complexes and the formation of social spaces in a place of residence.

This article concerns problems related to the design of single-family housing architecture - tomorrow's detached house exemplified by designs prepared by the students of the Chair of Housing Environment at the Faculty of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology in Semester 4 in the academic year 2011/2012. Such a house is meant for the years to come when today's students and tomorrow's architects will run their own professional practice in the field of design and implementation. The students' functional and spatial solutions of tomorrow's houses revealed various ideas of shaping man's sustainable housing environment in the near future, especially in the domain of housing architecture. This paper includes a profile of the presented designs pertaining to the subject matter, the educational results of the Chair of Housing Environment and the tendencies in teaching the sustainable architectural and urban design of tomorrow's houses.

This article is its author's voice in a discussion on the state of the housing environment in Poland. He ascribes an improvement in this situation to aiming to shape various forms of a sustainable housing environment. He postulates the following issues which can improve the quality of the housing environment: promoting the implementation of ecological housing estates as the healthiest, energy-saving, using 100% of renewable energy, economical and optimal from the viewpoint of keeping extensive balance and harmony between nature and architecture, guaranteeing the best possible living conditions for man, keeping balance within a residential complex between developed areas (50% - architecture) and open, biologically active areas (50% - nature), implementing public spaces in residential complexes in order to increase the quality of their inhabitants' lives in all the commonly used spaces, to satisfy social needs, to guarantee places and suitable conditions for interpersonal contacts, etc., keeping balance within a residential complex between the area of the commonly used grounds -"public spaces" - and the summary area of all the storeys in all residential buildings used exclusively by their residents - "private spaces", shaping a high-quality housing environment in the field of health care and a guaranteed possibility of choosing proper forms of residence, looking for balance in relationships between man's diverse needs and the surroundings he lives in by aiming to secure optimal programmatic, functional, spatial, ecological, compositional, esthetical, social and economic solutions, etc.

Artykuł dotyczy wybranych problemów związanych ze zrównoważonym projektowaniem architektoniczno-urbanistycznym zespołów niskiej intensywnej zabudowy mieszkaniowej na wybranych przykładach w miastach niemieckich (Kolonia) oraz holenderskich (Almere, Middelburg). Autor wykazuje, że kształtowanie środowiska mieszkaniowego w jedności architektury z otoczeniem z poszanowaniem przestrzeni prywatnych i publicznych oraz krajobrazu przyrodniczego i kulturowego z zastosowaniem współczesnych, ekologicznych rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych, technologicznych i materiałowych stwarza optymalne warunki dla człowieka. Analizowane przykłady charakteryzuje duża różnorodność rozwiązań funkcjonalno-przestrzennych i ekologicznych; harmonijny związek z krajobrazem oraz z najbliższym otoczeniem; wysoka jakość architektury oraz układów kompozycyjnych; przyjazny stosunek do przestrzeni prywatnych oraz publicznych; silny związek z zielenią, wodą, przyrodą. Wszystko to razem tworzy jedną wspólną całość – architekturę wkomponowaną harmonijnie w otoczenie. Poprawę warunków życia mieszkańców w polskich miastach autor upatruje m.in. w indywidualnym kształtowaniu zrównoważonych, ekologicznych, różnorodnych form niskiej intensywnej zabudowy mieszkaniowej. Zabudowa ta jest wielką, niewykorzystaną szansą w kształtowaniu siedlisk mieszkaniowych.

This paper concerns selected problems related to the sustainable architectural and urban design of complexes of low-rise intensive housing development exemplified by German (Cologne) and Dutch (Almere, Middelburg) cities. The author proves that shaping a housing environment in the unity of architecture and its surroundings with respect for private and public spaces as well as the natural and cultural landscape with the use of contemporary, ecological functional and spatial, technological and material solutions creates optimal conditions for man. The analyzed examples are characterized by the diversity of functional, spatial and ecological solutions; a harmonious relationship with the landscape and the nearest surroundings; the high quality of architecture and compositional layouts; a friendly attitude towards private and public spaces; a strong relation with greenery, water and nature. All these jointly create one common whole – architecture harmoniously composed into the surroundings. The author ascribes an improvement in the living conditions for the inhabitants of Polish cities to the individual creation of sustainable, ecological, diverse forms of lowrise intensive housing development. It is a great, compromised chance of shaping residential settlements.

Przedstawiono dwie grupy zielonych wnętrz publicznych i omówiono ich podstawowe cechy związane z lokalizacją i gospodarowaniem terenem, rozwiązaniami materiałowymi i technologicznymi w zakresie kształtu przestrzennego oraz instalacji, a także ich znaczenie społeczne i kulturowe.

The paper summarizes the sustainable characteristics of public spaces inside the city housing environment. There were two groups of green urban interiors presented and tehy basic features such as: localisation and land use, material and technological solutions in spacial shape and installations also they social and cultural meaning were characterized.
