The paper presents problems related to state variable reconstruction using a speed observer based on an extended induction motor model. A system of linearized differential equations has been proposed to describe dynamics of observer errors. The quality of observer dynamics has been determined by eigenvalues of the state matrix. Evolutionary algorithm has been used as a method for selection of gains of the observer. Results of simulations and real experiments has been presented and connection between poles placement and real properties of speed observer has been shown.
