Metal oxide varistors, being of nonlinearly resistors are commonly used for protection of electronic and power engineering devices against over-voltage surges. The operational reliability, along with assurance of suitable level of protection, is one of the main concern in varistor design and manufacturing. The bottle neck of varistors is the their susceptibility to degradation. The high temperatures and strong charge impacts much accelerate the varistor degradation what is manifested by the asymmetry of the I-V characteristics and the increase of the leakage current. Heating varistors to about 200 deg C causes that the I-V asymmetry disappears and the I-V characteristics reshape what is demonstrated by the passage of the TSD current. The phenomena of the degradation was provoked by exposing varistors to the action of the 50 fiA DC current at 115 deg C for 21 hours. In the case of varistors doped with Bi203 modified by other metal oxides there were no TSD peaks what proves that they were resistant to degradation.
