Within the last two decades Polish town planning law has not guarded spatial and sustainable order. In Poznan, historic town planning complexes were recorded in the Monument Register. However, in practice, conservator offices treat them as a conglomeration of separate buildings or urban greenery elements, not connected by spatial and functional relations not only with the outside but even within the scheme interior. 'Law on spatial planning and management of 27 March 2003', due to proper provisions made in spatial management plans, makes it possible to protect 20-th-century, or even the latest town planning structures, as contemporary cultural assets. The protection formula, specified in local plans seems to be correct, because unlike entries in historical monument registers enables a further controlled evolution of an object or scheme, obviously in accordance with their value identifiers.

At Present in many big European cities there are a lot of design ideas and realizations of architectural and urban complexes shaped in the big scale. This process results from the great need of the complex restoration of physical and functional structure of contemporary cities (especially: former industrial areas, railway areas, store and harbour areas, river banks), as well as from the need of creation big urban complexes of specific function and technology (such as: Olympic villages, ecological housing complexes, tele-villages, big commercial and service complexes, technological and business parks, etc.). In the paper there are presented examples of chosen architectural and urban complexes in European cities as well as in Warsaw. Analysis of different examples created the possibilities of the evaluation of integration of each complex in existing city structure (especially compositional legibility), as well as the possibilities of the evaluation of the, images of the complexes as the "city within the city" as a positive feature. Many of presented examples are waterfront areas and terrains neighbouring river. River flowing through town should join both parts into one unique spatial composition. It is possible to achieve this aim by harmonious development of river banks as well as by effective and aesthetic banks' connections. The development of all areas neighbouring river should be co-ordinated. Now in the face of processes of transforming our towns (such as becoming uniform and similar) - enhancing landscape values of river valley in town could positively influence and emphasise town's identity.
