W nadchodzących latach polską elektroenergetykę czekają fundamentalne zmiany, ponieważ elektrownie cieplne, dostarczając obecnie ponad trzy czwarte energii elektrycznej, mają zostać w zdecydowanej większości całkowicie zlikwidowane. Ponieważ elektrownie te trzeba będzie w końcu zastąpić, z jednej strony kreślone są perspektywy budowy krajowej energetyki jądrowej, a z drugiej strony prezentowane są utopijne wizje świetlanej przyszłości, w której praktycznie cała energia elektryczna pochodzić będzie ze źródeł zeroemisyjnych. W artykule autorzy poddali gruntownej weryfikacji koncepcje związane z przestawieniem krajowej energetyki na źródła zeroemisyjne, wykazując nierealność tego rodzaju przedsięwzięcia. Co więcej, w artykule pokazano, że tzw. źródła zeroemisyjne w istocie nie istnieją, ponieważ każda ze znanych obecnie technologii energetycznych jest w jakimś stopniu szkodliwa dla środowiska naturalnego

In the coming years, the Polish electricity sector is facing a number of fundamental changes, as thermal power stations, currently supplying more than three quarters of the country's electricity, are to be decommissioned in their vast majority. As these power plants will eventually have to be replaced by something, on the one hand the prospects for the construction of a domestic nuclear power industry are outlined, and on the other hand utopian visions of a bright future in which virtually all electricity will come from zero-emission sources are presented. In the article, the authors thoroughly verified the concepts related to the conversion of the domestic energy sector to zero-emission sources, demonstrating the unrealistic nature of such an undertaking. Moreover, the article shows that so-called zero-emission sources do not actually exist, as each of the currently known energy technologies is to some extent harmful to the environment

Polish energy sector is moving away from the principles of sustainable development and this causes serious tensions within the European Union. Continuation of current trends may lead to ecological catastrophe. Europe and the world invest in zero-emission sources not only for ecological reasons. These sources, especially solar and wind energy subject to an inevitable decline in energy costs in the long term, and also mitigate risks related to fuel costs escalations and reduce costs of adjustments of coal fired plants to the environmental regulations. The authors of this article indicate that the efforts should be made towards rapid development of totally emission-free renewable energy sources and gradual displacement of combustion processes in the power industry. This transition cannot be implemented without seasonal heat storages and integration (market coupling) of heat and electricity markets.
