Rough set theory is an important tool to extract knowledge from relational databases. The original definitions of approximation operators are based on an indiscernibility relation, which is an equivalence one. Lately, different papers have motivated the possibility of considering arbitrary relations. Nevertheless, when those are taken into account, the original definitions given by Pawlak may lose fundamental properties. This paper proposes a possible solution to the arising problems by presenting an alternative definition of approximation operators based on the closure and interior operators obtained from an isotone Galois connection. We prove that the proposed definition satisfies interesting properties and that it also improves object classification tasks.

Content available Ant-based clustering for flow graph mining

The paper is devoted to the problem of mining graph data. The goal of this process is to discover possibly certain sequences appearing in data. Both rough set flow graphs and fuzzy flow graphs are used to represent sequences of items originally arranged in tables representing information systems. Information systems are considered in the Pawlak sense, as knowledge representation systems. In the paper, an approach involving ant based clustering is proposed. We show that ant based clustering can be used not only for building possible large groups of similar objects, but also to build larger structures (in our case, sequences) of objects to obtain or preserve the desired properties.

Intuitionistic fuzzy sets and rough sets are widely used for medical image segmentation, and recently combined together to deal with uncertainty and vagueness in medical images. In this paper, a rough set based intuitionistic fuzzy c-means (RIFCM) clustering algorithm is proposed for segmentation of the magnetic resonance (MR) brain images. Firstly, we proposed a new automated method to determine the initial values of cluster centroid using intuitionistic fuzzy roughness measure, obtained by considering intuitionistic fuzzy histon as upper approximation of rough set and fuzzy histogram as lower approximation of rough set. A new intuitionistic fuzzy complement function is proposed for intuitionistic fuzzy image representation to take into account intensity inhomogeneity and noise in brain MR images. The results of segmentation of proposed algorithm are compared with the existing rough set based fuzzy clustering algorithms, intuitionistic fuzzy clustering and bias corrected fuzzy clustering algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of proposed algorithm.

In this paper we present the new rough sets module for NovoSpark® Visualizer (NV) software. We describe the NV system architecture and the place of the new module in it. We also present the procedure of rough sets analysis with NV software. In addition an example of rules discovering and visualization is provided to evaluate the proposed module. The results show that useful rules are discovered efficiently from the data set.

W artykule zaprezentowano projekt nowego modułu do automatyzacji teorii zbiorów przybliżonych dla oprogramowania NovoSpark® Visualizer (NV). Opisano architekturę systemu oraz wskazano miejsce nowego modułu. Ponadto zaprezentowano przebieg procedury analizy i wizualizacji zbiorów przybliżonych w systemie. Przedstawiono przykład odkrywania i wizualizacji reguł za pomocą opracowanej procedury. W wyniku przeprowadzenia eksperymentu udało się otrzymać szereg użytecznych reguł decyzyjnych.

Agile development is a crucial issue within software engineering because one of the goals of any project leader is to increase the speed and flexibility in the development of new commercial products. In this sense, project managers must find the best resource configuration for each of the work packages necessary for the management of software development processes in order to keep the team motivated and committed to the project and to improve productivity and quality. This paper presents ReSySTER, a hybrid recommender system based on fuzzy logic, rough set theory and semantic technologies, aimed at helping project leaders to manage software development projects. The proposed system provides a powerful tool for project managers supporting the development process in Scrum environments and helping to form the most suitable team for different work packages. The system has been evaluated in a real scenario of development with the Scrum framework obtaining promising results.

Real life data sets often suffer from missing data. The neuro-rough-fuzzy systems proposed hitherto often cannot handle such situations. The paper presents a neuro-fuzzy system for data sets with missing values. The proposed solution is a complete neuro-fuzzy system. The system creates a rough fuzzy model from presented data (both full and with missing values) and is able to elaborate the answer for full and missing data examples. The paper also describes the dedicated clustering algorithm. The paper is accompanied by results of numerical experiments.

Content available remote The dynamic response of an elastic background under undetermined variable loads

The problem of Lagrange stability of an elastic background excited by undetermined variable loads is considered. A discrete model of the background with bounded excitations is studied. Applying optimal Lyapunov functions, upper bounds on the dynamic response of the background are estimated and interpreted in terms of rough sets. The described approach is useful to estimate vibration transmission in ground as well as to analyze vibration of a road surface or rail-track loaded by moving vehicles.

The paper presents the attempt of applying rough sets theory and ROSES software to build the automated currency pair trading system. ROSES system's rule induction m.odule was used to extract rules from the feature space, built upon moving averages differences and other technical analysis indicators. The rules obtained were evaluated through the simulation of a trading system.

W artykule opisano zastosowanie teorii zbiorów przybliżonych do indukcji reguł decyzyjnych pozwalających ocenić zadowolenie klientów korzystających z serwisu pojazdów. Integralną częścią pracy jest analiza wykonana za pomocą programu komputerowego ROSE 2, który został użyty do generowania reguł decyzyjnych. Program umożliwił wyznaczenie dwudziestu pięciu reguł pewnych oraz trzech reguł przybliżonych, dzięki którym możliwe jest określenie, które czynniki w najwyższym stopniu wpływają na zadowolenie klientów. Analiza satysfakcji klienta pozwoli określić, jak należy kształtować przyszłe relacje z klientami serwisu oraz zwrócić uwagę na luki w jakości obsługi klienta.

The paper presents application of the approximate sets theory to induce decision-making rules allowing to evaluate satisfaction of vehicle service customers. An integral element of this paper is the analysis performed with the ROSE 2 computer application, which was used to generate decision- making rules. The application allowed to determine twenty five sure rules and three approximate rules. They make it possible to determine, which factors affect customer's satisfaction to largest extent. Customer's satisfaction analysis will allow to determine how to form future relations with service customers, and to draw attention to gaps in customer service quality.

Opracowano komputerowy algorytm oraz program komputerowy oceny technologiczności konstrukcji z wykorzystaniem zbiorów przybliżonych. Algorytm ten wykorzystano do oceny technologiczności części maszynowej w aspekcie kryterium kształtu, rodzaju materiału i chropowatości powierzchni.
