W historii sztuki wojennej można znaleźć wiele przykładów na potwierdzenie założenia, że zaskoczenie i przewaga to przywileje nie tylko nacierającego i silniejszego, lecz także broniącego się i pozornie słabszego uczestnika starcia. W ostatnich latach problematyka ta nie jest zbyt popularna na łamach piśmiennictwa wojskowego. Wydaje się jednak, że powrót do rozważań nad zagadnieniami zaskoczenia i przewagi w działaniach defensywnych jest wciąż uzasadniony, nawet w świetle dynamicznego rozwoju technologicznego sił zbrojnych. Autor przybliża poglądy wybranych przedstawicieli myśli wojskowej drugiej połowy XX wieku na temat zaskoczenia i przewagi w działaniach defensywnych. Na podstawie wyników badań podejmuje próbę określenia czynników determinujących zaskoczenie nacierającego przeciwnika w uwarunkowaniach drugiej dekady XXI wieku. W konkluzji zawiera konstatacje i przemyślenia na temat przygotowania oficerów do uzyskiwania zaskoczenia w toku prowadzenia obrony

In the history of the Art of War, there are many examples to confirm the assumption that surprise and superiority are not only the privileges of the attacking and stronger participant of the battle, but also of the one in defense, and seemingly weaker. This issue is not very popular in military literature, However, it seems that returning to the discussion on the matter of surprise and superiority in defensive actions is still justified, even in the light of the rapid technological advancement of armed forces. The author familiarizes the readers with the ideas of chosen representatives of military thought from second half of the 20th century, regarding surprise and superiority in defensive operations. Basing on research results, the author makes an attempt to pen down the factors that determine surprising the attacking adversary in the conditions prevailing in the second decade of the 21st century. The conclusion includes observations and reflections on the subject of preparing officers to achieve the element of surprise in the course of executing defensive operations.
