The dynamically changing operating conditions of modern organizations cause changes in their processes, including project management. It can be observed that, increasingly often, projects are a structured response to problems occurring in the company, especially in the sphere of production and work organization. Therefore, there is a need to determine the factors and conditions that require proper management in order to increase the chances of a successful implementation of a project. This relationship is also recognized in the case of pro-ergonomic projects that implement goals and tasks relating to ergonomics. For this reason, this article addresses the issue of identifying and assessing such factors – those in relation to the way projects are conducted as well as those which concern organizational and safety culture. The main goal of this article is to examine the opinions of experts on the factors which determine the success of pro-ergonomic projects in terms of their importance, and to determine the significance of factors relating to safety culture in comparison. The results of the expert opinion research were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in a box-plot chart. The analysis pointed to the conclusion that factors relating to safety culture were assessed by experts as the most important (compared to the factors connected with organization of the project and factors linked to carrying out ergonomic activities in the organization). It can also be stated that the factors relating to organization of the project (usually resulting from the project management methodology adopted) were rated the lowest.

Purpose: The main research objective entails identification of the project excellence manifestations in project-immature organizations as well as delineation of the areas of excellence positively affecting the PMMM-model-accordant organizational project maturity. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the research objective, the methods of bibliometric analysis and literature review, as well as an opinion survey, statistical analysis and LOGIT modeling, were used in the theoretical and the empirical dimensions respectively. The study covered a group of large organizations registered in Poland, which were assessed with respect to their levels of project maturity and excellence. The statistical analysis carried out allowed a delineation of the excellence areas positively impacting project maturity in organizations at low stages of project maturity. Findings: The vast majority of the examined group of large organizations is characterized by low levels of project maturity and excellence. The entities surveyed meet the excellence criterion mainly in the areas of process integration and culture. Statistically, the area of excellence supporting organizational project maturity is informal project management. Areas of project excellence, which, if properly managed, will positively affect the level of organizational project maturity have been identified. Research limitations/implications: The use of non-probabilistic sampling is a research limitation restraining the conclusions formulated to the surveyed group of 48 large organizations. The study carried out can serve as an inducement of extended empirical investigations. Future research should be focused on the search for the factors supporting and hindering the achievement of higher levels of project maturity, in order to formulate assumptions regarding a strategy enabling organizations’ transition to higher levels of project maturity. Practical implications: The research results indicate important interdependencies between the stages of project maturity and the areas of excellence. These interdependencies call the attention of business and project-management practitioners to the prospect of achieving higher levels of organizational project maturity through targeted management of the key, from the positive¬impact perspective, areas of project excellence. Recognition of these mechanisms should encourage businesses to take deliberate steps aimed at improvement of organizational project management. Originality/value: The article fills an important cognitive gap by indicating that management activities focused on the project excellence areas identified in the paper can positively impact the levels of project maturity. The results can be of significance for both the researchers exploring for the factors supporting the achievement of higher project-maturity levels as well as the practitioners, i.e., organizations keen on methodical improvement of project maturity levels.

Purpose: The realization of large, characterized by high uncertainty and variability IT projects is usually complicated and overlong, and their effectiveness often lower than expected. Hence the role of the project leader as the person responsible for the success of the project is of particular importance. In this context the purpose of the paper was to investigate the relationship between technical (directional in IT) education and technical experience in IT of a leader, and team work effectiveness in IT projects, recognized as one of the predictors of the project's success. Design/methodology/approach: Empirical research was conducted to verify the existence of the predicted relationship and to reach the aim of the paper. The study was quantitative in character. The set of hypotheses was built based on the theoretical research and then verified the CAWI method on sample of 178 respondents working on IT projects in organizations operating in Poland. The calculations were made using the PS Imago Pro ver. 7.0 and Process macro for SPSS ver. 4.1 by Andrew F. Hayes. Findings: It has been shown that there is indirect relationship between the studied variables, and the mediators of this relationship are leader’s technical competences and the leader’s efficiency. There is a mediation relationship between the dependent variable (team work effectiveness) and independent variables (technical education and technical experience in IT of a leader). Research limitations/implications: Performed empirical study is burdened with certain limitations. The obtained sample of 178 respondents is by far not a representative sample and verified only in one business context (Poland). In order to generalize the results in future research cross-national study and larger samples can be collected. Practical implications: The obtained results contribute to practice of management, showing that among various groups of factors determining team work effectiveness in IT projects both soft and hard (technical) competencies of the leader are important. The latter are shaped by the technical, directional (in IT) education and technical (in IT) experience of the leader. This has practical implications, especially for HR services in the process of employees recruitment. In addition to soft skills, knowledge of programming languages and programming experience should be a significant assets wanted when hiring IT project managers. Originality/value: This research enhances understanding factors determining team work effectiveness in IT projects. The research make an important contribution to the body of project management and human resources management literature by demonstrating the meaning of the technical education and technical experience of a leader for team work effectiveness in IT projects.

Purpose: The goal of the study was to examine project managers ability to apply different styles of leadership depending on the project situation. Design/methodology/approach: LEAD-Self questionnaires were used as the main research tool, which is based on the Model of Situational Leadership by P. Hersey and K. Blanchard. The tests were carried out in 12 production plants located in Poland, Italy, Spain, Turkey and China. The plants produce parts for household appliances, automotive and HVAC industries as well as intelligent power grids. 45 project managers participated in the study. Findings: Research results indicate that project managers have a wide range of styles, yet their adaptability is low and moderate level. None of the surveyed project managers has a high level of adaptation. This means that the project managers participating in the study use only the basic leadership style and only occasionally use supporting styles. Practical implications: Implications for organizations and project managers are given in the publication. The most important of them is training project managers in the field of situational leadership model and making managers aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each style, so that they are able to adapt them to the situation and to be ready to act by individual team members. Originality/value: The publication refers to the issue of situational leadership in the context of project management, which broadens the knowledge of human resource management in project management, and highlights the importance of adapting the leadership style of a project manager to a specific situation. The publication can be valuable for organizations implementing industrial projects and for project managers themselves.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to identify the needs of User Experience (UX) designers in organizations. Design/methodology/approach: In the theoretical part, the author uses a literature review to analyse the literature in the area of User Experience, requirements engineering, and also refers to selected stages of project management in organizations. The empirical part uses a qualitative method - in-depth interviews. The author developed a scenario and the goals she wants to achieve by interviewing User Experience designers. Findings: The needs of User Experience designers have been identified in four areas: the division of the UX/UI position, the essence of design system, communication with the client and the design process in the organization. Most respondents value the lack of division of the UX/UI designer position. UX designers need regular meetings with the client and understanding of the individual stages of design by the client. Designers would also like to be able to conduct their own research with users and maintain constant contact with developers. In addition, respondents emphasize the need to develop a design system in the organization. Research limitations/implications: In future research, the author would like to conduct research with User Experience designers from other countries and conduct a comparative analysis of the collected results. Practical implications: The conducted research indicates the needs of User Experience designers in organizations. After reading the article, project managers should consider whether the problems identified can be noted in their companies as well. Finding solutions to these problems may result in improved working conditions and, consequently, in the construction of better end products. Originality/value: The key value of the research carried out as part of the article is the identification of current problems of User Experience designers. Project managers, after getting acquainted with the requirements, problems of UX designers, will be able to make changes in organizations.

Purpose: The ability of an enterprise to execute projects, using the tools appropriate to do so, is called project maturity. On the other hand, at a higher level of detail, it is seen as the appropriate selection of a portfolio of projects, in such a way that the implementation of given projects is directed to support the goals and strategies of the enterprise, as well as the ability to apply appropriate project management tools and techniques. Accelerating changes in the company's environment, cause them to be forced to implement project management, in order to increase flexibility and standardization, so that activities become more professional. In sum, this translates into better financial health of the enterprise, a better position among competitors and, what is related to this, gaining new markets for their products and services. Project maturity models provide a starting point for conducting an analysis of the current state of the enterprise and indicate the direction or directions in which the enterprise should develop. The purpose of this article is to present the results of a usability analysis of project maturity models for an IT enterprise. The following models are presented in it: PMMM (The Kerzner Project Management Maturity Model) - developed by H. Kerzner; P3M3 (Portfolio, Program and Project Management Maturity Model) - developed by the Office of Government Commerce; OPM3 (Organizational Project Management Maturity Model) - developed by the Project Management Institute; P2MM (PRINCE2 Maturity Model) - developed by the Office of Government Commerce. The essence of project maturity, the project approach and its operation and improvement in management systems is also discussed. Design/methodology/approach: The article is exploratory in nature, and the primary research was conducted using the expert interview method. Research limitations/implications: Future research should focus on further analysis of both design and process maturity models. Practical implications: The research discussed in this article can contribute to further empirical research, including, among other things, the initiation of work on the development of a project maturity model aimed at the IT industry. Social implications: The practical implications of the research involve the possibility of using IT to improve existing maturity models and practical implementation in IT companies. Originality/value: The main value of the article is the analysis of models past IT practitioners, and the overview presented is based on existing and used maturity models.

The article is devoted to the issues of project management in terms of the effective use of analytical techniques. In the introductory part, the issues of designing were presented and process management, and the requirements for the final product (project, service) were outlined. The study verified the hypothesis that the SWOT analysis and the QFD method significantly contribute to reduce costs, shorten design time and support the process ofreconciling the world of suppliers with the expectations of potential customers. In order to verify the hypothesis, an example of the implementation of cloud solutions in an organization (enterprise) was used, where carefully selected data was used, taking into account the desired features of the product (service) by both designers and target recipients. The study used as an example an analysis of the implementation of cloud solutions in an organization (enterprise) in order to verify to what extent analytical tools are useful for supporting the design of such solutions. Conducting a SWOT analysis together with the interpretation of cross tables simultaneously with the use of the QFD method allowed to draw conclusions that answer the question: Whether the presented methods are applicable in the decision-making process of implementing cloud solutions and to what extent the presented analytical techniques support the management process, translating into a reduction in project time and costs, they expose the risk and indicate the critical threats for the organization (enterprise) related to the project in question? The data used in the article were selected deterministically, omitting the survey process, because the purpose of the article is to verify the possibility of using the presented analytical techniques. The weighting coefficients of the features in the SWOT analysis were also selected objectively using the qualitative method, while thinking about further development of the research, a survey of the expected features of the product (service) should be conducted on the appropriate group of respondents, which would allow to increase the credibility of the research results. The methodology used in this research can be implemented in the process of designing similar ICT solutions.

The paper mainly aims to characterise project management (PM) practices of industrial Lean initiatives by analysing and comparing three main topics: PM approaches, PM teams, and project alignment with the company’s strategy. This research encompasses two exploratory industrial case studies with an extensive literature review. Key professionals were interviewed to obtain an in-depth vision of the field. The study results allowed characterising project management practices of industrial Lean initiatives in industrial companies based on the following dimensions: 1. Understand the needs; 2. Find a suitable team; 3. Use visual tools; 4. Apply a continuous improvement (CI) approach; 5. Identify KPIs for the context; 6. Get support from the top management. This work fills a gap related to studying the PM practices applied during the implementation of Lean initiatives, proposing a schematic representation of PM variables and actors in industrial Lean initiatives. Identifying the main variables and actors that industrial companies use to develop Lean initiatives can be insightful for Lean practitioners in the context of project management.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present part of a report on stakeholder analysis (indicating the importance of stakeholder identification and prioritisation) in projects implemented by sustainability-oriented teams. Design/methodology/approach: The results were obtained based on a focus group interview with forty-eight participants - representtatives of different organisations, experienced in project management and possessing expertise on the tourism industry in Pomerania. The study was carried out in Gdańsk, from May to September 2021. Findings: The results of the study showed that an effective policy regarding sustainable development measures should be based on intensive stakeholder outreach. The determinant of this effectiveness is to entail proper and comprehensive stakeholder identification, which can play a key role in the success of any investment. Research limitations/implications: The purpose of the marketing research on stakeholder identification and mapping is to provide insights on the public opinion in this regard. In the course of the study, some limitations were recognised. Firstly, the sampling techniques involving audience generation and data filtering, such as data collection from only those persons who had participated in a focus survey, certainly resulted in a bias in the type of the data collected. Secondly, the study, due to the outbreak of the pandemic, was limited to 2021 only, and despite the implementation of selected projects in five countries in the South Baltic region, it was conducted in Poland exclusively, due to limited travel possibilities. Practical implications: The research was commissioned by a real project team and concerned the operating environment of the tourism enterprises in the Pomerania region. The survey results were applied in practice and served as a project implementation indicator. Social implications: The research topic of stakeholder identification as a component of sustainable development policy undoubtedly has impact on the society. This is because it leads to the promotion of an approach that takes the balance between the actions undertaken for the environment and the local community as well as corporate profit generation into account. Originality/value: It is the first study of this kind (on the Polish market at the least), examining the sustainable development approach in international projects, in the context of stakeholder outreach.

EN
Purpose: In the literature relatively little attention is paid to the project manager’s background, i.e., to the importance of whether the project manager is a line manager, a line employee of the organisation in question who is no one’s supervisor or whether the project manager is involved solely in project management. The purpose of this paper is to answer the question of how the type of project manager is related to project success. Design/methodology/approach: The research hypothesis was formulated and the results of the empirical studies were presented. The empirical verification of the research hypothesis was accomplished through survey research in Europe and USA. Findings: Based on the empirical data obtained, it was concluded that in terms of all three project parameters (scope, time and cost), the project manager, who is also a line manager, was the most successful. The empirical research indicated a possible relationship between project manager type and project success. Research limitations/implications: In the analysis, it should be borne in mind that there are other several internal and external factors responsible for potential problems in meeting the project scope, schedule and budget. Practical implications: Project management by line managers can be a sound basis for the interaction of processes and projects, manifesting itself, for example, in the transfer of knowledge between processes and projects during the activity of solving problems, especially those lying at the interface of one type of activity and another. Originality/value: The results obtained should draw attention to the need to complement previous research characterising the ideal or effective project manager with a new variable, the type of project manager.

Purpose: Working in virtual teams and realizing projects through ICT tools has become the usual way of collaboration, especially across knowledge workers. Therefore this paper has two research objectives. The first objective is to verify to what extent the virtuality level is correlated with knowledge sharing behaviors. The second objective is to verify to what extent methods of management projects are correlated with knowledge sharing behaviors in virtual teams. Methodology: To achieve research objectives empirical research was conducted. Based on the previous research, the online survey was designed. The survey was filled out by 336 members of virtual teams. They worked using ICT tools and realize technology projects in the IT industry. Collected data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Imago Pro to test hypotheses. Findings: The correlation between the level of virtuality and knowledge sharing behaviors did not confirm. The hypothesis that methods of project management are correlated with knowledge sharing behaviors in virtual teams was partly supported. Research limitations: Research was conducted in technology teams in the IT industry. Virtual team members only from European companies have taken part in the research. Practical implications: Results can be useful to manage virtual teams not according to overall beliefs but scientific evidence. Based on the results it is possible to identify which variables for knowledge sharing behaviors in virtual teams are significant and which are not. Originality/value: Only a few studies have explored knowledge sharing in a virtual context. This paper supports scientific evidence of the level of virtuality and methods of managing projects concerning knowledge sharing behaviors as not discovered in earlier research.

Purpose: Project management is a universally recognized methodology for business and project activities. Organisations are increasingly using project activities to achieve strategic benefits. It is purposed to optimize the time, human and financial resources, without deviating from the planned quality of the final product of the project and while maintaining the principles of sustainability. The energy sector is no exception. The purpose of this paper is to determine trends in energy sector project management. Design/methodology/approach: To present the research concerning project management in energy sector innovations the literature review process was carried out. The analysis of keywords, abstract, and on this basis further deeper analysis of scientific texts allowed to identify trends in project management in the energy sector. There is a research gap in research summarizing trends in the description of the issue of project management in the energy sector. Findings: The literature analysis presented indicates that the interest of scientists is largely directed towards sustainable projects in the energy sector. This has to do with global trends not only in the energy sector but in every sector of the economy. Energy project management should continue to focus on becoming more sustainable, especially when more and more organizations are aware that their strategy should include ecological sustainability, such as eco-innovation and environmental innovation. Originality/value: It is one of the few scientific texts that touches on the problem of project management in the energy sector. In terms of implications, studies have shown that particular emphasis should be placed on the aspects of project teams creating sustainable innovations for the sector, as well as neutralizing the carbon footprint of the project teams themselves.
