Industry requires devices which would ensure periodically changeable driven wheel kinematic characteristics while maintaining constant kinematic characteristics of the driving shaft. A relatively new solution of this kinematic problem are variable-speed belt transmission systems with a timing belt. While designing such drives an important issue is finding a correct toothed profile of a non-circular wheel. The process of designing such wheel profiles shall take into account several constraints being a result of kinematic and geometrical characteristics of variable-speed belt transmission systems. This paper presents a method of designing non-circular wheel envelopes applying CAD and CAD/CAM systems and reverse engineering methods.
