Mining companies that own opencast excavations with the prospect of future reclamation, may constitute a serious consumer group for gangue (mining waste) from coal mining and other groups of waste. The aim of the study is to identify the location of active opencast mining excavations of carbonate raw materials in relation to the boudaries of the Main Groundwater Basin (MGB) in Poland. The exploited excavations of carbonate raw materials are located in the southern Polish provinces (Dolnośląskie, Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Małopolskie, Opolskie, Podkarpackie, Śląskie and Świętokrzyskie voivodships) and are located on the map of the MGB boundaries prepared by PSH PIG-PIB. As a result it was found that 29 of the 66 pits are located within the designated MGB areas, which represents about 44% of the total area. In such areas, proper selection of wastes is a very important issue because of their quality and possible changes in chemical composition over time.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki obserwacji wydzielania się metanu z urabianego węgla i ociosów wyrobiska podczas drążenia kombajnami 19 wyrobisk korytarzowych w Górnośląskim Zagłębiu Węglowym. W oparciu o teorię podobieństwa określono liczby bezwymiarowe opisujące ruch metanu w wyrobisku, a następnie podano zależności służące do obliczenia ilości metanu wydzielonego z urabianego węgla i ociosu węglowego. Stwierdzono istotny wpływ położenia wyrobiska w górotworze naruszonym lub nienaruszonym robotami górniczymi na ilość wydzielonego metanu.

Results of observations of methane emission from the won coal and walls during headingmachine drivage of 19 narrow workings in Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Basing on the theory of similarity dimensionless numbers describing methane movement in the working have been determined and next relations-hip used for calculation of methane quantity emitted from the won coal and coal walls have been given. An essential, influence of the working location in the rock mass affected by working or virgin rock on the quantity of emitted methane has been stated.
