Major advances and challenges in heterogeneous catalysis for environmental applications: A review

Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the fastest developing branches of chemistry. Moreover, it is strongly connected to popular environment-related applications. Owing to the very fast changes in this field, for example, numerous discoveries in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, it is believed that an update of the literature on heterogeneous catalysis could be beneficial. This review not only covers the new developments of heterogeneous catalysis in environmental sciences but also touches its historical aspects. A short introduction to the mechanism of heterogeneous catalysis with a small section on advances in this field has also been elaborated. In the first part, recent innovations in the field of catalytic air, water, wastewater and soil treatment are presented, whereas in the second part, innovations in the use of heterogeneous catalysis for obtaining sustainable energy and chemicals are discussed. Catalytic processes are ubiquitous in all branches of chemistry and there are still many unsolved issues concerning them.

Profitability of using renewable energy sources is determined by comparing the cost of generating a unit of energy to the price of the same unit of conventional energy which usually comes from coal. Political and legal elements also exert a significant influence on the use of renewable energy. In countries where environmental protection issues are treated seriously, every opportunity is used to eliminate fossil fuels combustion. This refers even to an opportunity which in the initial phase of development is unprofitable. The prices of conventional energy do not take account of external costs, since their full internalisation is difficult to implement due to economic and political reasons. However, awareness of this fact should make one support the development of ecologically pure energy sources by employing different economic instruments (subsidies to investments and to the price of the energy produced, tax reductions, etc.). If the scale of development of those sources grows, the generation costs will fall, the originally unprofitable sources will become profitable and subsidies will be redundant.

Przedmiotem publikacji, jest identyfikacja aktualnego stanu rozwoju sektora polskiej energetyki odnawialnej, a także identyfikacja najistotniejszych kryteriów, charakteryzujących techniczny i ekonomiczny aspekt ich wykorzystania w procesach energetycznych. Spośród wielości kryteriów charakteryzujących każde źródło energii odnawialnej z osobna, wyodrębniono grupę kryteriów uniwersalnych, znajdujących zastosowanie wobec każdego z omawianych źródeł i mogących być podstawą przeprowadzanych analiz techniczno-ekonomicznych. W publikacji, wskazano również przyczyny niedostatecznej dynamiki rozwoju sektora energetyki alternatywnej, z których najistotniejszą jest ciągły brak zrozumienia dla konieczności współistnienia na rynku zarówno rozwiązań konwencjonalnych, jak i alternatywnych, a także wciąż niedostateczna świadomość techniczna, ekonomiczna i ekologiczna podmiotów oddziałujących na rozwój sektora.
