Park Mużakowski jest przykładem europejskiej sztuki ogrodowej z pierwszej połowy XIX wieku. Twórcą parku jest książę Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, niemiecki planista ogrodowy, który tworzył scenerie parkowe w stylu angielskim. „Dom Angielski” wraz z zespołem drewnianych obiektów tworzą cenną pamiątkę scenerii parkowej po polskiej stronie parku. Jednak do dzisiaj zachowały się jedynie relikty zabudowań oraz materiały archiwalne.

In the article the aspects concerning the excavation impact and values of displacements of the ground and existing structures in the vicinity of deep excavations are presented. Four cases of excavations in typical Quaternary soils of Warsaw executed in the close proximity to the existing metro tunnels (and station) are described with special emphasis put on the description and analysis of experimental data including in-situ measurements of vertical displacements of existing metro structures. The discussion and conclusions on the displacements of structures (EPB TBM tunnels with segmental lining and cubature metro stations) in the vicinity of excavations depending on their location relative to excavation are presented. Typical ranges of displacements in relation to the depth, distance and type of structures influenced by deep excavations are given. Equation for the prediction of vertical displacements of TBM tunnels in the vicinity of deep excavation is formulated. In addition, the 2D finite element modelling of one of the described example cases is made and presented in detail. The results of FE analysis are compared to the actual experimental monitoring data.

In Poland, researchers have a very strong interest in archaeometallurgy, which, as presented in classical works, focuses on dating artefacts from the prehistoric and early medieval periods in the form of cast iron and copper castings. This study, extending the current knowledge, presents the results of a microstructure investigation into the findings from the Modern era dating back to the late Middle Ages. The investigated material was an object in the form of a heavy solid copper block weighing several kilograms that was excavated by a team of Polish archaeologists working under the direction of Ms Iwona Młodkowska-Przepiórowska during works on the marketplace in the city of Czestochowa during the summer of 2009. Pre-dating of the material indicates the period of the seventeenth century AD. The solid copper block was delivered in the form of a part shaped like a bell, named later in this work as a “kettlebell”. To determine the microstructure, the structural components, chemical composition, and homogeneity, as well as additives and impurities, investigations were carried out using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy including analysis of the chemical composition performed in micro-areas, and qualitative X-ray phase analysis in order to investigate the phase composition. Interpretation of the analytical results of the material’s microstructure will also help modify and/or develop new methodological assumptions to investigate further archaeometallurgical exhibits, throwing new light on and expanding the area of knowledge of the use and processing of seventeenth-century metallic materials.

Some cities have incessantly teemed with life for centuries, even for millennia. Currently, the oldest inhabited urban settlements are deemed to be those located in the Old World. Their contemporary layouts are very different to how they were originally, this is very often hidden in relics which attest to the older layers. Searching for such layers is a fascinating task. Sometimes, they can be found in the layout of public spaces, or in the architecture of historic buildings and complexes. Others remain deeply concealed underneath the surface of streets, squares, pavements, and parks. Most frequently, the exposure of larger parts of the remains of old architectural and urban structures is not easy due to the need to secure efficient functioning of the contemporary urban tissue. Architectural and archaeological reserves established especially in Europe, help to restore the lost memory of the city by exhibiting its historic layers.

Niektóre miasta nieprzerwanie tętnią życiem od wieków, nawet od tysiącleci. Obecnie za najstarsze wciąż zamieszkiwane miasta uważa się te położone w Starym Świecie. Ich współczesna struktura przestrzenna daleko odbiega od pierwotnych układów. Bardzo często ukrywa w sobie relikty świadczące o dawniejszych nawarstwieniach. Poszukiwanie tych warstw jest zajęciem fascynującym. Niekiedy można je odnaleźć w układzie przestrzeni publicznych czy w architekturze zabytkowych budynków i zespołów. Inne pozostają głęboko ukryte pod powierzchnią ulic, placów, chodników i parków. Najczęściej ekspozycja większych fragmentów pozostałości dawnych struktur architektoniczno-urbanistycznych nie jest łatwa ze względu na prawidłowe funkcjonowanie współczesnej tkanki miejskiej. Tworzone, zwłaszcza w Europie, rezerwaty architektoniczno-archeologiczne pomagają w przywróceniu utraconej pamięci miasta poprzez ekspozycję jego historycznych warstw.

Archeologów i badaczy historii od zawsze interesowało życie społeczne, kulturalne i rodzinne ludności, która wyprodukowała i użytkowała odkrywane przez nich przedmioty historyczne. Najważniejsze pytania dotyczą pierwotnego przeznaczenia odkrytych w czasie wykopalisk przedmiotów oraz sposobu ich wytworzenia. Ważne jest także zbadanie ich składu chemicznego, tak aby mozliwa była ich renowacja, konserwacja oraz odpowiednie przechowywanie.
