The authors propose a method for extraction of a contour understood as an inflexion point of an image function in the direction of the image gradient vector. In the computer program accomplishing the method, the contour is detected as a passage through zero of a directional derivative of a scalar gradient field (gradient module) of a smoothed image (convolution with a Gaussian function), where the direction of derivative is the direction of the gradient vector. The method is illustrated on the basis of a highly noised image, where the comparison is made with the results of application of other existing definitions of the contour.
