Besides hydropower, biomass belongs in Poland to the basic source of renewable energy. The utilization of biomass for energy purposes develops fastest among of all sources of renewable energy. As the resources of biomass resulting from wastes are depleting, energy plantations ought to be developed. Additionally the gasification of wood, integrated with the production of electricity, is considered to be a perspective technology of utilization of biomass. There are, however problems with the consumption of biomass due to its weak density in the raw state, low LHV dependent on the contents of moisture and its corrosive properties. Co-combustion of biomass with hard coal in Polish power plants and CHP's can ensure the achievement of a 7,5% share in the production of electricity from renewable resources. The paper deals with two selected problems of utilizing biomass in power plants, viz. the assessment of the useful effects of the co-combustion of biomass taking into account changes in the energy efficiency of the boilers and the own consumption, as well as the problem of preliminary drying of the biomass.
