Motifs and Symmetry Characteristics of the Ornamentation on Traditional Greek Woven Textiles from the Area of the Aegean

This paper presents an analysis of woven ornamentation of traditional Greek textiles from the area of the Aegean. The aim of this research is to explore the relationship between woven ornamentation and the technology used for its construction. Ornament forming on woven structures is specific because of the influence and restrictions that weave technology imposes on the aesthetic result of the artifacts produced. In this study, a group of traditional hand–woven fabrics from the Aegean area was digitally recorded. The decoration and motifs of these textiles /were analysed using the international classification and notation system created by H. J. Woods and M. A. Hann, taking into account the limitations that exist in the case of woven ornaments. This methodology enables the classification of woven ornaments into categories, making possible the comparison of ornament ‘types’ with the weave techniques used. Results of the symmetry analysis of these textiles are presented in this paper and lead to some conclusions that show that technology plays a determinant role in the appearance of woven ornaments.

W pracy zaprezentowano analizę zdobnictwa tradycyjnych greckich tekstyliów z obszaru wybrzeża Morza Egejskiego. Celem badań było znalezienie związku pomiędzy zdobieniami a techniką użytą do ich wykonania. Tworzenie zdobień na strukturze tkaniny jest specyficznym procesem, ponieważ technologia tkania narzuca pewne ograniczenia, czym wpływa na ostateczną estetykę wyrobu. W pracy zapisano cyfrowo grupę ręcznie tkanych tradycyjnych tkanin z obszaru wybrzeża Morza Egejskiego. Analizowano zdobienia i motywy tych tekstyliów używając klasyfikacji i systemu zapisu stworzonego przez H.J. Woods’a i M.A. Hann’a, a także biorąc pod uwagę ograniczenia istniejące w kwestii zdobień tkanin. Taka metodologia umożliwia podział zdobień na kategorie, czyniąc możliwym porównanie typów zdobień z użytą do ich wytworzenia techniką. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki analizy symetrii tekstyliów, które pokazują, że technika wytwarzania odgrywa zasadniczą rolę w wyglądzie zdobień.

In this work, attention is focused on the salience and repetition of symmetry and colour features over shifts of time and on the preference of symmetries and colours in Lithuanian traditional textiles within all ethnic regions. The analysis of ornamental symmetry is based on the geometrical characteristics governing the structures of these designs. For this reason, Woods’ classification and notation system as improved for woven ornaments is applied. The ornaments of Lithuanian pick-up sashes and overshot fabrics have been analysed using the original computer-aided data bank, which stores record-sets of 600 exhibits collected from the resources of the M.K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art. Using computer-aided simulations of the ornaments helps to both preserve and analyse these sensitive and archaic textiles. The results obtained from the analysis of Lithuanian ornaments on pick-up sashes and overshot fabrics contribute to the understanding of the originality of character of these traditional textiles, and the versatile relationship between the culture’s mentality and technologies.

W przedstawionej pracy skupiono się na występowaniu w ciągu minionych wieków cech charakterystycznych i powtarzalności symetrii i kolorów. Badano preferencję różnych symetrii i kolorów tradycyjnych tkanin litewskich we wszystkich regionach etnicznych Litwy. Analiza symetrii ornamentów oparta jest na geometrycznej charakterystyce, której podlegają struktury analizowanych deseni. W tym celu zastosowano klasyfikację Wooda i system notacji udoskonalone i przystosowane do ornamentów tkanin. Analizowano ornamenty litewskich pasów i drelichów, korzystając ze wspomaganego komputerowo banku danych, gromadzącego 600 zapisów, wyselekcjonowanych ze zbiorów Narodowego Muzeum Sztuki im. M.K. Ciurlionisa. Komputerowa symulacja ornamentów pomaga analizować, jednocześnie chroniąc delikatne zabytkowe tekstylia. Wyniki przeprowadzonej analizy litewskich ornamentów stanowią przyczynek do lepszego zrozumienia oryginalności i charakteru tych tradycyjnych tekstyliów, jak również związków pomiędzy świadomością kulturową a technologią.

Software for Creation of a Database of Ornamentation of National Woven Fabrics

We present an original software package for the creation of a database which would enable the storage of ornamentations of national fabrics. A suitable design of the database is the keystone for selecting software which would allow the storage, re-design and visualisation of ornamentations effectively, accurately, and efficiently. The software we have developed contains three main modules which have the following functions: the creation and loading of a database, the presentation of a record set in the ‘ornament design window’, and printing the record set data with the aid of a specialised window. The second module is the main one, because provisions are made for the researcher (for example, an ethnologist or museum-specialist) to understand more deeply a given ornament’s structure and the methods of its creation. The ornament notation system we propose allows the presentation of an ornament as analysed in the ‘ornament design window’ in a view that corresponds completely to the original sample. In addition, this database allows the textile designer to choose a segment stored therein, to create a new ornament using the symmetry operations, and finally to compare it with the original sample. The database application program presented contains Lithuanian national ornaments, but it can be successfully used in a broader context for the analysis and comparison of the ornamentation of various cultures.

Przedstawiono oryginalne oprogramowanie dla tworzenia bazy danych, pozwalającej na gromadzenie informacji o ornamentach tkanin ludowych. Konfiguracja bazy danych jest podstawą do wybrania takiego oprogramowania, które pozwoli na efektywne i dokładne gromadzenie, przekształcanie i wizualizację wzornictwa. Oprogramowanie, opracowane przez autorów, spełnia następujące funkcje: tworzenie bazy danych i wprowadzanie informacji, prezentacja zapisu w oknie nazwanym „projekt ornamentu " oraz druk zapisu w kolejnym oknie. Drugi moduł oprogramowania jest najważniejszy, ponieważ umożliwia badaczowi (np. etnologowi lub pracownikowi muzeum) na bardziej wnikliwe zrozumienie struktury ornamentu i sposobów jego tworzenia. Proponowany przez autorów system notacji pozwala na prezentację analizowanego wzoru w oknie „projekt ornamentu" w sposób, który całkowicie odpowiada oryginalnej próbce tkaniny. Baza danych pozwala projektantowi dodatkowo wybrać skatalogowany segment i stosując odpowiednie operacje symetrii, stworzyć nowy ornament i porównać go z oryginalną próbką. Opracowane przez autorów oprogramowanie zostało zastosowane do stworzenie bazy ornamentów litewskich tkanin ludowych, ale może być też stosowane skutecznie dla analizy i porównywania ornamentów innych kultur.

The development of the method presented was made considering the mathematical basis of the ornamentation and technological features of the fabrics. Building on the works of H. J. Woods, M. A. Hann, and using original investigations, a method for analysis and synthesis of ornaments within the context of CAD for woven textile design is proposed. Using this method, the new computerised creation of woven ornaments based on matrix multiplication is proposed for analysis and synthesis of the ornaments of woven fabrics. We discuss some limitations which exist in the creation of fabric ornamentation when the ornament is obtained in the weaving process.

Uwzględniając matematyczne podstawy ornamentacji i właściwości technologiczne tkanin, w oparciu o prace H. J. Woods'a i M. A. Hann'a oraz własne badania, zaproponowano metodę analizy i syntezy ornamentów z użyciem CAD do wzornictwa tkanin. Zaproponowano nową komputerową metodę tworzenia ornamentów w oparciu o mnożenie macierzy. Przedyskutowano ograniczenia, występujące przy tworzeniu wzorów, jeżeli wzory te są uzyskiwane w procesie tkania.
