Workplace design is an essential process for the manufacturing industry to realize a low manufacturing cost with high productivity and competitive advantage, as well as high employee performance and well-being. Although research on workplace design in the Indonesian manufacturing industry began more than 20 years ago, workplace conditions in the manufacturing industry, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia, have remained subpar, with high material handling costs. This review article aims to evaluate recent research on workplace design in the Indonesian manufacturing SMEs and explore possible directions for further research. The results of this review indicate that the research on workplace design in Indonesian manufacturing SMEs is mostly focused on the department area (micro-level), using systematic layout planning methods to improve material handling activities. Even though environmental conditions are unfavorable with low levels of occupational safety and health, research that consider these two in the process of designing workplace in Indonesian manufacturing SMEs is still limited. This review also shows the possibility of developing an integrated workplace design by involving environmental ergonomics and occupational safety and health in manufacturing SMEs.

Artykuł przedstawia metodę wykorzystania technik rzeczywistości wirtualnej podczas prowadzenia prac badawczych dotyczących osób niepełnosprawnych na stanowiskach pracy. Korzystając z symulowanego stanowiska pracy składającego się z komputerowych modeli wszystkich istotnych obiektów rzeczywistego środowiska, można ocenić możliwość wykonywania pracy przez osobę niepełnosprawną, zaproponować stosowne modyfikacje, a następnie przetestować ich zasadność oraz wpływ na wygodę i wydajność pracy. W każdym z tych etapów uczestniczy niepełnosprawny pracownik, dzięki czemu wynikowe stanowisko dostosowane jest do jego potrzeb i preferencji.

This paper describes a method of adapting workplaces for workers with motion disability with virtual reality techniques. A simulated work space built with computer models of all important objects of a real workplace makes it possible to assess the ability of a worker with a disability to work, propose modifications and analyse their influence on ergonomics and work efficiency. All these tasks are performed with the participation of a worker with a disability, which ensures that the workplace fits the worker's needs.

Crews on tankers traveling and hauling cargo on the lower reaches of the Mississippi River during the hot and humid (H&H) summer season face various occupational safety and ergonomics problems. Evaluation of medical data reveals that a large number of the crewmembers experience job related injuries, diseases, disorders, and exhaustion as a result of adverse environmental conditions (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH], 1993). The accidents and injuries that occurred were characterized and then analysis was used to recommend constructive remedies and solutions. The results were also used to design and develop better work environments on the tankers and in the general industry. In H&H conditions, the body’s chemical reactions constantly change in order to maintain the best possible reaction to changing environments. This chemical reaction increases blood flow to the skin through sweating. Body metabolism stabilizes body temperature through muscular work and convection, evaporation and radiation remove heat.
