Nowadays, as a result of globalization processes, the sense of identity and relationship between humans and their place of living is increasingly losing its importance. Today’s thinking about the house as a centre of the world is becoming less obvious in comparison to the symbolism of a house in the folk culture. Wooden houses on the Polish and Belarus border are an example of a temporal continuum – both in the spatial and in the spiritual aspect. Because of their architecture, decoration on facades and spatial layout, they are a distinctive feature of the local landscape, and ethnic communities inhabiting them, to this day have maintained a strong identification with their own roots and place of residence. The greatest threat to the continuity of local tradition as well as wooden architecture of borderland villages is their progressive extinction. That is why the issue of protection of the cultural heritage and the generational memory of local residents is one of the key issues in maintaining the identity of those areas. The aim of the article which is based on ethnographic sources and field researches is to present the symbolism of traditional wooden houses in the villages of the north-eastern Poland as areas of material and spiritual values and to bring attention to the need of protecting them in the context of contemporary civilization changes.

Artykuł oparty na źródłach etnograficznych i badaniach terenowych, przedstawia symbolikę tradycyjnych domów drewnianych we wsiach południowo-wschodniej części województwa podlaskiego, pogranicza polsko-białoruskiego jako obszarów wartości materialnych i duchowych oraz zwraca uwagę na potrzebę ich ochrony w kontekście współczesnych przemian cywilizacyjnych. Domy te stanowią przykład czasowego kontinuum, tak w przestrzennym jak i duchowym aspekcie. Swoją architekturą, dekoracją na elewacjach i lokacją w układzie przestrzennym, stanowią wyróżnik lokalnego krajobrazu, a zamieszkujące je społeczności etniczne, po dziś dzień zachowały silną identyfikację ze swoimi korzeniami i miejscem zamieszkania, pielęgnując przekazywane z pokolenia na pokolenia tradycyjne treści. Największym zagrożeniem dla przetrwania drewnianej architektury wsi pogranicza oraz spuścizny niematerialnej jest ich depopulacja. Toczące się obecnie debaty w kręgach architektów, konserwatorów, czy samorządowców na temat ochrony spuścizny kulturowej podkreślają, że działania takie powinny być prowadzone wieloaspektowo, przez różne podmioty, co ważne z czynnym i praktycznym zaangażowaniem społeczności wiejskich. Rolę transmisji międzypokoleniowej oraz żywej tradycji podkreślają także światowe dyrektywy Unesco dotyczące ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego. Z jednej strony tego typu zabiegi mogą stać się formą aktywizacji lokalnych mieszkańców oraz gestem szacunku dla reprezentowanych przez te grupy wartości. Z drugiej natomiast, stanowić spoiwo pomiędzy pokoleniami i istotny środek przekazu dla zachowania ich kultury.

A basic need of every responsible man is to provide for own housing with the continual increase of world population energy consumption is growing continually as well and in parallel there is an increase in CO2 emissions. Buildings during their lifetime use approximately 40% of energy, while its operation concerning heating and cooling counts for 60-70% of this consumed energy. The most suitable solution means building houses with low energy demands which do not harm the environment Therefore the preferred solution has become to build houses with low-energy houses not burdening the environment. The aim of this chapter is to present the basic aspects and advantages of wood buildings as well as their requirements for the internal layout from the point of ergonomics changes. We can state that based on findings and research, that the current generation of people has significantly higher height and weight proportions. Based on linear regression equations we define the magnitude of secular changes for men and women. The change represents a 1.55 mm body height increase for men and 0.5 mm for women per year.
