Virtual museum. Museum of the future?

The following article discusses examples of museums that implement virtual reality in presentations of exhibits and museum objects. Trends that shape contemporary museums are discussed. The aim of the article is to familiarise the reader with the possibilities of modern applications in museum exhibition presentations.

Wirtualna rekonstrukcja obiektu historycznego polega na wykonaniu jego cyfrowego modelu w oparciu o dostępne dane o charakterze naukowym. Powodzenie tej procedury jest uzależnione od stopnia uszczegółowienia modelu, który jest pochodną stanu wiedzy o obiekcie. W przypadku braku niezbędnych danych dochodzi do ich pominięcia i w rezultacie zubożenia modelu lub posłużenia się domysłem i niebezpieczeństwa przekroczenia granic działań o charakterze naukowym. Jest więc wirtualna rekonstrukcja procedurą, w trakcie której dochodzi do identyfikacji luk w wiedzy o obiekcie stanowiącym przedmiot rekonstrukcji, a ich lista określa zakres postulowanych badań prowadzących do jego pełnego rozpoznania. Powyższą procedurę zastosowano podczas wirtualnej rekonstrukcji zamku w Dobrej.

A virtual reconstruction of a historic building is based on building its digital model based on available research data. The success of this procedure depends on the model’s level of detail, which is in turn derived from what is known about the building. Should necessary data be missing, they are ignored and the model’s value decreases; alternatively, one can use suppositions and risk crossing the boundary of academic conduct. Virtual reconstruction is a procedure during which gaps in knowledge about the reconstructed building are identified, and their list defines the scope of postulated tasks that could lead to the building’s full exploration. This procedure was applied in a virtual reconstruction of Dobra Castle.

Powyższy artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie podstaw źródłowych oraz badawczych, na bazie których opracowano wirtualną rekonstrukcję zamku w Prudniku z przełomu czasów średniowiecza i wczesnej nowożytności. Powstały model jest wzorcem do stworzenia makiety. Ma ona dać wyobrażenie o całości zabudowań zamkowych, z których do dziś przetrwała tylko wieża. W rozważaniach prowadzących do odtworzenia przestrzennej formy architektonicznej autorki korzystają przede wszystkim z najstarszego znanego źródła ikonograficznego – rysunku Friedricha Bernharda Wernera ukazującego zamek od strony północnego wschodu. Istotne w odtworzeniu wizerunku obiektu były także wyniki badań wykopaliskowych przeprowadzonych na terenie nieistniejących zabudowań. Zachowana wieża zamkowa pozwoliła przybliżyć pionowy wymiar założenia. W artykule omówiono także historię i lokalizację obiektu.

The purpose of the article was to show the source and research basics, upon which the virtual reconstruction of Prudnik’s castle, from the turn of Middle Ages and early modern age, was based. The design can be used as a base for a model, which presents the full scope of the castle’s buildings, from which only the tower still exists. To restore the architectural, spatial form, the authors used primarily the oldest, known iconographic source – Friedrich Bernhard Wernher’s drawing, showing the castle from the northeastern side. Restoration of the image was also possible due to excavation research, which took place on the site of the no longer existing buildings. In addition, the preserved tower helped to estimate the vertical dimension of the object. The history and location of the castle in Prudnik was also covered in the article.
