Evapotranspiration is the key and predominant component of the water balance in wetlands. Direct evapotranspiration measurements are challenging in wetlands due to their remoteness and high surface water level. This article describes the actual (ETa and reference evapotranspiration (ET0) from a cultivated wet meadow located in the Biebrza National Park - the largest national park in north-east Poland, Central Europe. The data were sourced from a micrometeorological station equipped with an eddy covariance system to measure heat and vapour fluxes and such meteorological elements as radiation balance components, air temperature and humidity. The values of directly measured ETa were presented daily in the context of available energy and ET0. Daily sums of ETa ranged from below 0.2 mm in winter to 6.5 mm in summer. The share of daily sums of ETa in the ET0 usually ranged from 50 to 60%, with extreme values from 10 to 170%. Aside from giving more insight into Biebrza wetlands’ functioning, the actual data produced in this study may be used instead of indirect methods, which were used the most in modelling wetlands areas.

Stormwater runoff is a source of water pollution containing a wide range of chemical pollutants and various disease-causing bacteria and viruses that are transported by runoff to water bodies and have a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, stormwater treatment should meet the highest standards and contribute to sustainable water resource management. Responding to today‘s environmental challenges and following the Green Deal and Circular Economy’s goals, it is necessary to apply new innovative solutions and infrastructure in stormwater management. Research shows that green solutions might be a potential tool to treat stormwater and to ensure the proper quality of surface water bodies. The article aims to discuss various possible solutions of green infrastructure (rain gardens, green roof, wetlands etc.), which could be applied in future research to remove pollutants (heavy metals, organic compounds etc.) from stormwater. Studies have found multiple benefits of using green infrastructure in order to protect the environment. It is a cost effective, innovative and architectural measure, which promotes economic growth, contributes to climate change mitigation, reduces urbanization impact on the environment and creates recreational and green spaces.

Mangroves and the associated shoal forest known as ‘restinga' are ecosystems of great ecological relevance that play a significant role in the protection of the coastline in tropical regions. In Brazil, the coastal region has been severely affected by urban expansion. The Paranaguá Port, located in Paraná State (Brazil), is the fourth most important Brazilian port in throughput, and is located in an estuarine region which features large mangrove forests. An historical assessment of its inner access channel dredging rates was made to assess the impacts that the expansion of the Port in the last 30 years may have caused to the ecosystem. In the following, the historical data concerning the dredged volume in the inner access channel was compared to the mangrove and the shoal forest associated variation, aiming to establish a potential correlation between vegetation and siltation in the inner access channel to show as the preservation or restoration of specific ecosystems has potential to Nature-Based Solutions.

The purpose of the described research was an attempt to estimate the leaf area index (LAI) parameter describing the structure of the vegetation based on the Landsat 5TM satellite imagery and field measurements made with the use of an optical plant canopy analyzer. The study was carried out in north-eastern Poland in the Biebrza river valley within the boundaries of the Biebrza National Park during the growing season of the year 2007. There were 13 spectral indices given in the literature known to be correlated with the LAI. The highest coefficient of determination and the highest correlation coefficient were obtained for the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) indices for the wetland areas in the Biebrza river valley. The field measurements of the leaf area index and its spatial representation on satellite image show that the vegetation of natural river valleys is characterized by high spatial and seasonal variability. The study of the LAI on such large natural areas that are extensively used also requires knowledge of the methods of land use and the application of individual agrotechnical measures.

The aggregate of various taxonomic groups of microorganisms colonising living organisms is known as the microbiome. The plant microbiome encompasses a wide network of biological, chemical and metabolic interactions between the plant and microorganisms (mainly algae, bacteria and protozoa). The relationships between microbes and peatland plants, particularly carnivorous plants, are a very interesting subject that is still little understood. Microbes colonising carnivorous peatland plants may be present in their traps or on the surface of the plant. Previous research on the relationships between the microbiome composition of carnivorous plants and the external factors influencing it directly and indirectly is still inadequate. There is a lack of review articles analysing the current state of knowledge regarding carnivorous plant-microbiome interactions. This review of the literature is a collection of data on the functioning of the microbiome of carnivorous plants growing in peatland ecosystems. In addition, it summarises the available information on host–microorganism relationships.

Aquifers formed in the wetland area around the closed lacustrine chalk mine at Mierzyno (northern Poland) are distinguished by a specific groundwater flow system, the main component of which is lateral flow and ascent seepage from the deep aquifer to the ground surface. In investigating the origin of the uncontrolled groundwater outflows and the phenomenon of progressing spring pools, field and laboratory work, as well as model studies of groundwater flow, allowed assessment of damage to the soil and aqueous environment. These occurred due to defective reclamation of post-mining areas, as a result of which the natural hydrodynamic balance in the groundwater was disturbed. Artesian pressure in the deep aquifer caused layer interruption at the boundary of the lacustrine chalk deposit. In consequence, strong uncontrolled outflow of groundwater occurred, and the accompanying spring pools are changing their position as a result of headward erosion. So far, the amount of washed-out carbonate sediment exceeds 5,600 m3.

The aim of the article is to analyze the occurrence of hydrogenic habitats in relation to morphogenesis and local groundwater circulation systems. The study was conducted in 2017 on 61 wetlands throughout Poland. Most of the studied habitats were located in the Vistula and Warta glaciation areas. The analyzed hydrogenic habitats belonged mainly to four habitat types: telmatic organic marshes, alluvial mineral marshes, periodic moistlands and peatlands. Three small mountainous spring areas were also included in the analysis. The impact of hydrogeological conditions on the supply and contact of groundwater with the habitat was analyzed. The type of hydrological feeding of habitats was also verified. The classification of morphogenetic conditions was based on the Detailed Geological Map of Poland at a scale of 1:50 000. Based on morphogenetic units, the dominant habitat types in individual units were specified: river valleys, plain glacilacustrine, ice-marginal valleys, lake plains, upland, outwash plains. The occurrence of individual types of habitats against the background of local groundwater circulation systems was also characterized. For selected habitats, a performed analysis encompassed the impact of fluctuations in the groundwater table over many years on the possibilities of groundwater supply.

The surface water table level is a crucial factor for the existence of wetland habitats, and valuable from the point of view of environmental protection. In particular, surface water table in a hydrological year play an important role, affecting the seasonal changes in conditions of the development of species inhabiting a given patch of vegetation. The occurrence of floods often determines the possibility of survival of a given plant community. Information on the seasonal variability of surface waters, and above all the range of seasonal floods, is very important from the point of view of planning protection activities in National Parks in order to preserve wetland habitats. Nowadays, remote sensing data is an important source of spatial information, particularly those characterized by low cost data acquisition and processing. One such source is imagery collected from satellites, along with products freely distributed by the European Space Agency. Satellites of the Sentinel constellation provide multi-spectral optical remote sensing images recorded at visible and infrared wavelengths. Due to the short satellite revisit time of the Sentinel, the images from this satellite constitute a potential source of information for the monitoring of moisture on wetlands with a high temporal resolution. In this study, the authors aim to demonstrate the possibilities associated with the use of satellite images to monitor the range of a free surface water table in the pilot area located within the basin of the Łasica Channel, located in the Kampinos National Park (Poland). The accuracy of the results of the remote sensing transformations will be assessed using high resolution RGB images obtained with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and control points measurements. The maps of free water table has been acquired as an result of ensemble regressors (Random Forest, Extra Trees, Bagging). Regressors has been learned and applied for two sessions. Promising results were obtained indicating the possibility of using the proposed method on a similar scale.

The post-glacial areas are characterized by favorable conditions for the formation of wetlands as a result of the widespread occurrence of depressions without outflow - center for the development of wetlands. The studies of morphogenetic conditions of the wetland development in Volhynian Polissia within the territory of Ukraine and the formation of their water regime reveal several features of their distribution and typological variety. The location of wetlands were characterized in reference to the shape of base/subsoil and its lithology. The typical structure of post-lacustrine, paludificational, riverside and spring peatlands of the Volhynian Polissia were shown and their development were also discussed. The wetland evolution under the influence of the postglacial landscape degradation leads to disappearance of the depression wetlands in glacial forms, increase of the peat bog trophicity and the level of peat dissolution. The supply conditions and characteristics of water regime are determined for separate peatlands. According to the origin and water flow/supply four types of wetland were extracted: ombrogenic, topogenic, soligenic and fluviogenic. It was found that the reasons of the high marshes areas (21%) in Volhynian Polissia are the geological and geomorphological conditions retaining/stopping the runoff and also local groundwater circulation system.

The potential of fi ve plants namely Atriplex halimus L., A. canescens (Pursh) Nutt., Suaeda fruticosa (Forssk. ex J.F. Gmel.), Marrubium vulgare L. and Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter from two selected wetlands in northwest Algeria subjected to house and industrial effluents were examined to assess their arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) diversity and colonization, as well as to determine their tolerance and ability in accumulating metallic trace elements (MTEs). The purpose was to investigate whether, or not, these fungi are related to metallic uptake. Arbuscular mycorrhizal association was observed in all plant species, since the dual association between AMF and dark septate endophytes (DSE) was found in roots of 80% plants species. Hence, the decreasing trend of metal accumulation in most plant organs was Zn>Cu>Pb, and the most efficient species were M. vulgare> S. fruticosa>A. canescens> D. viscosa> A. halimus. The bioaccumulator factors exceeded the critical value (1.0) and the transport factors indicated that all these species were phytoremediators. Pearson correlation showed that Cd bioaccumulation and translocation were inhibited by AMF infection; meanwhile Zn, Pb and Cd accumulation were affected by AMF spore density and species richness, DSE frequency, pH, AMF and plant host. Native halophytes showed a multi-metallic resistance capacity in polluted wetlands. M. vulgare was the most efficient in metal accumulation and the best host for mycorrhizal fungi. AMF played a major role in metal accumulation and translocation.

Although freshwater habitats play a crucial role in most ecosystems in the world, little is known on their functioning in tropical regions even in regard to the most often studied avian communities. In this study, counts on waterbirds were conducted in dry and wet season (in years 2001-2008) in a riverine habitat in southern Africa (Shamvura stretch of the Okavango River). In total, 84 waterfowl species were recorded. The birds were assigned to different guilds according to their migration activity, diet and nesting site selection. In overall, the species number was almost the same (74 vs. 73) in the wet and dry season. The abundance of all resident species recorded was lower in wet (N = 5992) than in dry seasons (N = 6965)(χ2 = 73.1, P < 0.01). In both seasons Palearctic migrants were represented by seven species, which comprised 1-2% of all waterbirds. Six species were classified as dominants: African reed cormorant Phalacrocorax africanus, African openbill stork Anastomus lamelligerus, cattle egret Bubulcus ibis, wattled lapwing Vanellus senegallus, African darter Anhinga rufa and white-faced duck Dendrocygna viduata. In the wet season the dominant species comprised 68%, while in dry season – 52.5% of all birds recorded. Significant seasonal differences in the numbers of individuals were shown for the following species: African reed cormorant, great egret, squacco heron, wattled lapwing and pied kingfisher. Insectivorous and omnivorous birds were more abundant in wet season, while piscivorous, carnivorous and plant eating birds in dry season. These differences can be related mainly to seasonal variation in the availability of food as well as to the timing of breeding.

The impact of land use and a distance from the highway on heavy metal concentration in soils along the highway has been investigated. 28 soil samples were collected in August 2014 from the roadside soils of the Hemmat highway of Tehran, Iran. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn and Cd were 144, 17.20, 18.91, 86.84, 3.86 mg/kg–1, respectively. With exception for Cd, the concentrations of the heavy metals decreased upon increasing distance from the highway that shows the background amount of cadmium in the soil area was high. The values of the enrichment factor (EF) showed that Ni, Zn and Cr have a natural source (EF < 10) and Pb and Cd have an anthropogenic source (EF > 10). The anthropogenic sources are emphasized for these heavy metals, thus indicating the strong human influence. The mean values of geoaccumulation index (Igeo) for Pb, Zn, Cd were high at residential, under-construction and green space land uses. The ecological risk index (RI) for roadside soils was higher than 300, indicating that sampling sites had a considerable ecological risk. The potential ecological risk index for single metal decreases in the following sequence: Cd > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cr.

Growth of a city, which is linked with intensive urban development, systematically affects groundwater recharge by diminishing its rate. Thus, the phenomenon influences groundwater resources in a hydrogeological unit and, in turn, it causes negative environmental consequences which are difficult or even impossible to reverse. This study analyses the effect of urban development on water budget and its impact on the water-dependent ecosystem. In 1959, a peat bog nature reserve – the Żurawiniec Nature Reserve - was established in the north of Poznań, covering an area of ca. 1.5 ha. During many years the area was losing its original character, which resulted in desiccation and complete deterioration of peatland plants. The analysis of water budget reduction was done through the integration of a spatially distributed water balance model and a numerical hydrogeological model. The simulations were based on data collected for the years 1952, 2001 and 2014. The results of simulations emphasize the significant human impact on groundwater budget leading to a continuous groundwater level dropdown, resulting in over 2 m lower groundwater level in year 2001 in relation to year 1952. The main reason for negative repercussion was a constant decrease of groundwater recharge due to urbanization.

Groundwater and surface waters are a common, inseparable resource of drinking water. The agricultural Kocinka River catchment in southern Poland is among the case studies within the BONUS - Soils2Sea project (Reducing of nutrient loadings from agricultural soils to the Baltic Sea via groundwater and streams). The study is oriented on exploring the possibilities of reducing nitrates. High concentrations of nitrates are observed in groundwater of the Upper Jurassic Major Groundwater Reservoir No. 326, in which the Kocinka catchment area is located. Previous studies in this area failed to determine whether there is denitrification of nitrates in groundwater. The aim of the study is to investigate the significance of denitrification processes in surface water for the quality of waters in catchments. The influence of artificial and natural water reservoirs on nitrogen removal in the catchment was evaluated. Samples and measurements were taken with particular attention to sites upstream and downstream of the reservoirs. Concentrations of nitrates, conductivity (EC), pH, dissolved oxygen and isotope ratios of oxygen and nitrogen in nitrates were determined in selected locations. The results indicate that nitrate reduction potential differs between the reservoirs. Especially fish ponds show high potential to remove nitrates, depending on seasonal variability.

The study assesses the performance of experimental wetland pond systems vegetated by Lemna minor L. (common duckweed or lesser duckweed) for textile azo dye removal. The objectives are to assess the influence of L. minor on water quality parameters, compare the dye and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of four dyes (Acid Blue 113, Reactive Blue 198, Direct Orange 46 and Basic Red 46) with each other, and monitor the effect of dye accumulation as a function of the relative growth rate (RGR) of L. minor. Findings indicate that the simulated shallow pond systems remove BR46 (low concentration) significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other dyes, and the ponds containing L. minor outperformed control ponds by around 51% in mean removal efficiency with a potential of L. minor for phytoremediation of approximately 13% efficiency.

Water quality status of marshes within Mesopotamia has been investigated, and temporal and spatial changes determined by examining causes and effects. Data gathered from predesiccation and after re-flooding periods were subjected to index and statistical analysis. The quality of waters in the region was assigned to polluted class, regarding specific salinity related parameters. Total dissolved solids, chloride and sulfate were main variables negatively impacting the water quality. The main quality parameters creating spatial differences between the selected marshes were electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids. Temporal differences in dissolved oxygen, salinity, nitrate and phosphate concentrations between the 1980's and 2000's reflected the impact of desiccation and water shortage on the marshes. Salinity and nutrient concentrations generally increased after desiccation compared to their historical levels. These findings indicated that the Mesopotamian marshes had poor water quality due to increase in the concentration of salinity. The study revealed that the index and statistical methods are useful tools identifying water quality and fingerprinting pollution. This will help decision makers to establish strategic and comprehensive water management plans.
