Importance of sketches, graphics and computer in designing green walls

Green facades are becoming more and more frequently used tools in the process of urban transformation. They are treated by architects and town planners as a new material which allows them to transform grey and unattractive urban environment. Their final look, however, requires careful decisions and selecting adequate floral arrangements. Graphics, paintings and drawings backed by the knowledge of botany may result in creating green walls which can be veritable floral masterpieces. Virtual 3D models, on the other hand, enable us to understand better the mutual interaction between the ‘green facades’ and the surrounding urban environment. When designing vertical gardens and green murals, it is worth remembering about all the possibilities offered by sketches and the computer in order to transform urban areas thoughtfully and consciously.

Zielone elewacje stają się coraz chętniej wykorzystywanym narzędziem w procesie transformacji miast. Urbaniści i projektanci traktują je jako nowy materiał pozwalający na zmianę szarej, miejskiej rzeczywistości. Ich ostateczny wygląd i odbiór wymaga jednak przemyślanych decyzji i dobrania odpowiedniej kompozycji. W drodze do osiągnięcia właściwego efektu wizualnego i społecznego projektant ma do dyspozycji coraz więcej narzędzi. Grafika, malarstwo i rysunek wsparte wiedzą z zakresu botaniki mogą stworzyć na elewacjach roślinne arcydzieła. Z kolei wizualizacje i modele 3D pozwalają na lepsze zrozumienie, w jaki sposób "zielone fasady" będą oddziaływać na otoczenie. Kształtując wertykalne ogrody lub zielone murale, należy pamiętać o możliwościach, jakie daje nam szkic i komputer, aby w pełni świadomie zmieniać nimi przestrzeń miejską.

Sztuka pełni szczególną rolę w edukacji ekologicznej, wzbogacając świadomość ekologiczną jej odbiorcy. W artykule omawiane są początki nurtu ekologicznego w sztuce. Koncentruje się on na współczesnych dziełach polskiej architektury powstałych w miastach. Przestrzeń miasta stawia nowe wyzwania architekturze zrównoważonej (sustainable architecture). Koegzystencję zieleni i przestrzeni industrialnej w mieście reprezentują budynki Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej i Sądu Najwyższego w Warszawie. Interesującym przykładem architektury o formach organicznych, odpowiadającym na problem niedostatku zieleni w mieście jest projekt Architektury Arborealnej Magdaleny Abakanowicz. Prezentowane dzieła architektury są nie tylko próbą ukazania, ale i rozwiązywania problemów ekologicznych, gdyż prowokują one do bardziej świadomego i odpowiedzialnego spojrzenia na środowisko.

Since art has a power to influence mind and spirit many artists create works encouraging to be active in the domain discussed in the paper - the ecology. The artists presented in the paper create so-called ecological art, the fundamental assumption of which is to motivate to ecological actions The presented works of art emphasize the greenery in the city as the crucial element of the urban environment, as well as investigate the relations between artificiality of the city buildings and their natural components. Example illustrating the discussed is the Library Garden of the University of Warsaw, designed by Irena Bajerska. The building constitutes a vertical gardens where the visitors may admire a multiplicity of plant species and varieties, planted in different parts. The second example of the green architecture in capital of Poland is the facade of The Supreme Court Building (designed by Marek Budzynski, Zbigniew Badowski and associates) that is a public building which questions frontiers between culture and nature. The best known Polish artist in the world Magdalena Abakanowicz said “The art does not solve problems, but it alerts us to their existence” created a project of so called arboreal architecture. Her tree-houses, designated for Paris, are meant to be covert with greenery vegetations vertical gardens.

Znaczenie zieleni, jest powszechnie znane szczególnie w centrach dużych aglomeracji o dużej intensywności zabudowy. Toteż dla jakości życia i kreowania optymalnego mikroklimatu terenów zabudowanych, działania podejmowane w celu zwiększenia areału powierzchni biologicznie czynnych stają się coraz bardziej istotne. Artykuł stanowi prezentację i analizę wybranych realizacji, w których w celu odtworzenia powierzchni biologicznie czynnych, przy zastosowaniu nowoczesnych technologii, skompilowano rozwiązania budowlane z elementami zieleni.

The importance of green areas is commonly known, especially in big agglomeration's centres characterised by a high intensity of land development. The activities aimed at increasing the acreage of biologically active areas are therefore becoming increasingly important from the point of view of the quality of life and the optimal microclimate of the built-up area. The paper contains a presentation and analysis of selected investments in which construction solutions were combined with green area elements in order to reconstruct biologically active zones by means of advanced technologies.
