A wavelength conversion scheme is presented experimentally using a wavelength tunable erbium-doped fiber laser as a probe light source and an electroabsorption modulator with a DC bias only.For the input wavelength of 1557nm with a 10-Gb/s non-return to zero signal, the Q value is 10.6and the power penalty is less than 1.5dB at a bit error rate of 10–9 at the probe wavelength of1560nm. Given a fixed Q value of 6, probe wavelengths cover a range of 25nm. Furthermore,the relationship between the range of probe wavelength and the amount of power penalty is alsoinvestigated.

Optical packet switching, which was supposed to take advantage of the large optical fiber bandwidth, has not been deployed yet, while it would promptly be applied had it offered advantages over electronic packet switching. In the article we discuss the recent progress in optical packet switching with emphasis on practical application. We also mention why optical packet switching has failed, and discuss its prospects.

Wavelength conversion based on the cross-polarization modulation (XPM) in a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has been numerically investigated by using the theoretical model in which the birefringence has been taken into account. The results show that the non-inverted and inverted wavelength conversion can be realized through selecting reasonably the parameters; there exit some differences in the chirp, extinction ratio (ER), and eye diagram of the converted signal between the non-inverted and inverted conversion; with the increase of the bit rate, the chirp increases and the eye opening ratio (EOR) decreases.

A time-domain model of a semiconductor layer with time-dependent inhomogeneous permittivity or conductivity is investigated by solving direct and inverse problems using a novel method, revealing a possibility of wavelength shifting and other desirable optical field transformation, as well as a remote diagnostics of fast time-varying inhomogeneous structures.
