Seas and oceans occupy approx. 71% of the Earth. On their surface wave action of stronger or weaker magnitude can be observed throughout a major part of the year. Wind-generated wave action contains energy, which can be retrieved and used for electrical current production. The paper shows what energy is contained in wind-generated waves on various ocean areas, presents dynamics of water movement in a wave as well as several examples of calculation results of the velocity of water particles and hydrodynamic pressures occurring in a wave.

Content available remote Quantitative Ultrasound of Cancellous Bone. Modeling and Experiment

The paper present theoretical and experimental issues related to application of Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) for assessment of cancellous bone quality and prediction of bone fractures. Commonly used for modeling of ultrasonic wave propagation in cancellous bone, the macroscopic Biot’s theory is discussed in context of its potential applicability for theoretical prediction of wave parameters: phase velocity and attenuation coefficient as functions of frequency. The analysis of the model is focused on the absorption mechanisms responsible for attenuation of ultrasonic waves in cancellous bone, which based on the ultrasonic experiments presumably play a predominant role in the total attenuation. The suitability of the model is discussed and verified by comparison of results of sensitivity analysis of the model with ex vivo experimental ultrasonic data obtained for cancellous bones filled with different fluids.

Opisano sposób pomiaru wybranych parametrów fali podmuchu generowanej detonacją górniczych materiałów wybuchowych. Na podstawie zmierzonej intensywności fali wyznaczono tzw. równoważnik trotylowy i heksoge-nowy badanych materiałów. Wskazano na zalety zastosowanej metody.

The measurements of some blast wave parameters have been carried out. The blast wave was generated by detonation of emulsion mining explosives. Experimental results were used for calculating TNT and HX-equivalent. The advantages of the method have been presented.

This paper presents an application of artificial neural networks to approximation and identification of additional wave-generated resistance, slamming and internal forces depending on ship motion and wave parameters. The analysis was performed for a typical bulk carrier in ballast loading conditions. The investigations were carried out on the basis of ship response data calculated by means of exact numerical methods. Analytical functions presented in the form of artificial neural networks were analyzed with a view of their accuracy against standard values. Possible ways of application of the artificial neural networks were examined from the point of view of accuracy of approximation and identification of the assumed ship response parameters.
