A comparative analysis of the influence on the natural environment of two different methods of dealing with municipal waste has been carried out in this work. The research has been based on the data coming from three waste dumpsites: two of them are still operating in Poland and the third one located in Breitenau, Austria is already closed, as well as from the municipal waste incineration plant in Vienna, Austria. The analysis was carried out with the application of the BAT method, which is preferred by the European Union, and with the consideration of the technical, economic and ecological criteria. The obtained results indicate that, as far as the analyzed area is concerned, thermal utilization is a more beneficial method than waste dumping in landfill sites.

W pracy dokonano analizy porównawczej wpływu na środowisko naturalne dwóch różnych sposobów postępowania z odpadami komunalnymi. Badania oparto na danych dotyczących trzech składowisk odpadów: dwóch działających w Polsce i jednego już zamkniętego w Breitenau, Austria oraz spalarni odpadów komunalnych w Wiedniu, Austria. Analizę wykonano z zastosowaniem techniki BAT, preferowaną przez Unię Europejską, biorąc pod uwagę kryteria techniczne, ekonomiczne i ekologiczne. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że termiczna utylizacja jest metodą bardziej korzystną w analizowanym zakresie niż składowanie odpadów.

Data on atmospheric air analysis collected in 1990 for the neighbourhood of now non-functioning municipal waste deposit located in Nowosolna nearby of Lodz were presented. This deposit was not properly operated. Similar analysis for properly operated municipal waste deposit in Dylów performed in 2004 was also described. Both deposits are located in Lodz province.

Przedstawiono dane analizy powietrza atmosferycznego pobranego w 1990 roku w pobliżu nieczynnego obecnie składowiska odpadów komunalnych w Nowosolnej koło Łodzi. Składowisko to nie było poprawnie eksploatowane. Podobną analizę przeprowadzono dla poprawnie eksploatowanego składowiska odpadów komunalnych w Dylowie koło Łodzi.

Surveying waste deposits aims to supervise and to check the volume of deposit, its height, shape and form. As well the inclination of the slopes has to be monitored to avoid too steep slopes causing landslides. Another point of interest is to supervise the deposit of contaminated waste and to monitor the compression and settings of filled up masses. This paper is an extract of a Power Point presentation from which the figures have been taken.

Dzięki odwzorowaniu kształtu niecki składowiska odpadów możliwe jest określenie jego pojemności. Badania możliwe są przy pomocy techniki geograficznego systemu położenia GPS. W pracy dokonano przeglądu metod pomiarowych. Badania zmian kształtu niecki w czasie umożliwią monitorowanie procesów zachodzących w składowisku.
